LingvoHelp mobile app can help blind and visually impaired people learn foreign languages via live video thanks to bilingual volunteers tutors.

The app is able to develop blind and visually impaired people's skills, reveal their inner potential in terms of learning foreign languages and being useful to volunteers as well, since the bilingual volunteers tutors will benefit from the app gaining teaching skills for the future career in the framework of Global Goal 4 (quality andinclusive education) and Global Goal 9 (Innovations).

At the moment we are looking for funding for app programmers to be able to create LingvoHelp app available on iOS and Android platforms. I also empower volunteers tutors to be engaged in the project and I hope to achieve the goal while presenting LingvoHelp project at Ilmenau University of Technology in Germany in the framework of International Student Week in Ilmenau and at Sustainable Development Youth Action Forum 2017 which will be held in Belgrade.

The project has been supported by Hans Jørgen Wiberg, 'Be My Eyes' app inventor who agreed to help me create the 'LingvoHelp' app and Esuna Dugarova, research fellow at the UN headquaters in NY.

In 2017 we plan to create LingvoHelp app in iOS and Android platforms and in 5 years we aim to reach 5,000,000 registered users for blind and visually impaired people to speak several foreign languages, have access to innovative technology and modern study methods, while bilingual volunteers tutors to acquire teaching skills for their future career.

After presenting LingvoHelp in Serbia, Germany and Russia I would like to share specific study methods with bilingual volunteers tutors team. To teach people with the disabilities it is necessary to acquire teaching skills related to innovative training and I hope I will be able to teach the team as well.

Explain your idea

The app is rather simple for blind and visually impaired people to use. First, a blind person creates a profile in the LingvoHelp app to learn a foreign language signed by a bilingual volunteer tutor as his/her mother tongue. Then a bilingual volunteer tutor creates a profile in the app by filling his/her application form (Inc. languages knowledge, education, professional or volunteer experience and additional skills) to help the blind person learn a foreign language and acquire teaching skills in a live video. The app creates two databases: 1) blind students database indicating their mother tongue and a language they want to learn; 2) bilingual volunteers tutors database indicating their mother tongue and a language they want to teach. After creating a profile and adding information on which languages a student speaks and which language he/she wants to learn, a student is waiting for the volunteer tutor’s call to get to know each other and discuss the course programme based on 3 linguistic aspects (speaking, vocabulary and grammar training). After filling the application form a volunteer tutor gives a video call in the app, speaks to his/her student, and makes the course programme related to the blind person’s language knowledge level for teaching.

Who Benefits?

Blind and visually impaired people of different ages, genders and nationalities can benefit from LingvoHelp app due to its simplicity. The project is related both to people with disabilities since they can be qualified as 'LingvoHelp' students and sighted bilingual volunteers willing to be tutors. Our first users will be informed about the project launch via such a popular youth network as HeySuccess cooperating with more than 1,000,000 users all over the world.

How is your idea unique?

The idea is unique, since it represents a mutual help both to people with disabilities who can learn foreign languages in free barrier environment and help volunteers tutors develop their teaching skils at the same time. It also can help break the stereotype on blind and vision impaired people's helplessness, as they play a significant role in young volunteers' professional skills development thanks to LingvoHelp app. LingvoHelp can also help people gain teaching experince without leaving their home and looking for internships or programmes abroad or worry about the lack of professional experience after graduation. LingvoHelp can be a perfect way of distance language learning available for millions of users all over the world thanks to the Internet and videoconferencing technology. I hope the app is able to develop blind and visually impaired people's skills, reveal their inner potential and change the world by breaking the stereotype on blind people's helplessness.

Idea Proposal Stage

  • Research & Early Testing: I am exploring my idea, gathering the inspiration and information I need to test it with real users.

Tell us more about you

Being an interpreter, tutor and activist for SDGs prompted me to foster the achievement of the global goals thanks to my project which will be presented at Sustainable Development Youth Action Forum 2017 and International Student Week in Ilmemau, Germany. Due to my leadership and volunteer experience I often deal with young people who have passion for learning and social activities but cannot realize these due to their disabilities. The problem prompted me to make a project unveiling educational opportunities for blind and visually impaired people across the world to study in free environment. This is ''LingvoHelp'' mobile app helping blind and visually impaired people learn foreign languages thanks to bilingual volunteers tutors. I think such innovative technologies for a better learning can symbolize investment in special study methods used by people with disabilities. I think the digital skills development can also let us define whether the people have access to innovative technology and quality and inclusive education in the framework of Sustainable Development Goals.
