By remotely controlling the shopping cart with your smartphone, you can carry your purchased items to your destination without using shopping bags and your hands.

When a lot of used shopping carts are accumulated at the apartment, a robot will automatically bring them back to the store.

Target markets are the following: ・Residents living in the apartment, especially those who live alone or who live in the downtown. ・Stores cooperated with this system.

How does or might your solution meet or exceed the performance of the single-use plastic bag?

・You can carry heavy luggage without getting tired. ・Stores will not need to pay for plastic bags which are used only once. ・Eco-friendly as it does not use the plastic bag.

How does this solution impact / improve workflows for stakeholders (e.g. cashiers, stocking staff)?

・The cashier will be able to save stores’ time, not having to put purchased items in bags. ・The clerk does not have to refill the shopping bags. ・The store manager does not have to manage the number of shopping bags. (There will be no more need for stacking staffs to restock plastic shopping bags.) ・When consumers who use this service first admit the service’s convenience, the number of customers is expected to increase, combined with limited numbers of cooperated stores. ・The introduction

What additional benefits might the solution provide to stakeholders (retailers and customers alike)?

・Customers will be able to go shopping without feeling any stress of carrying heavy luggage. ・As more using this service, cheaper the cost will be than purchasing plastic bags every time people go shopping. ・You can go shopping without having to bring a shopping bag, so you can easily buy what you want.

How is your solution scalable across retail environments?

・To increase the number of cooperated stores of the system, technical improvement of the service is required so that it can be used at all stores. ・Make it available not only to the residents of limited apartments, but also to those who live in nearby houses or those who are not cooperated with the apartment.

What regions will your solution be applicable in?

Residential and commercial area in downtown where a lot of apartments, supermarkets and convenience stores are located.

It can be reused and recycled because the shopping cart and cage on it are made of iron.

In what ways does or might your solution prompt behavior change amongst stakeholders, including retail staff and customers? How will your solution successfully design for this change?

・Regional vitalization through partnership between apartments and supermarkets or convenience stores. ・People can easily buy something, which contributes economic activities to get brisk and lively.

What unintended consequences can you foresee unfolding from your solution, and how might you mitigate them?

Our unintended consequences are the failure of a robot, the theft of shopping carts, connection failure with a smartphone and cyber-attack. In order to avoid these diseases, we have to update iOS frequently and set time passwords, fingerprints and facial recognition.

What health and safety concerns might your solution raise, and how are you considering addressing them?

・Entanglement accident involving a person and a shopping cart. ・Muscle weakness caused by not carrying luggage.

What are the biggest challenges you're facing today? What are existing gaps in your solution?

・It cannot be used when the floor is not flat like on the stairs. ・It is difficult to use when the road is narrow. ・It is difficult for older people to use because it is operated with a smartphone. ・High initial cost due to new introduction of robots and shopping carts. ・There are restrictions on the size and weight of luggage.
