WHAT TYPES OF VIRTUAL REALITY ARE THERE?

Some based on the system, others on experience. However, we consider this following sufficiently accurate by rounding the known spectrum:

NON-IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY

Also called "window to the world", or "window virtual reality", it is the simulation that is experienced through a computer screen and not through specialized glasses or an HMD (initials of Head-Mounted Display). TELEPRESENCE OR TELEOPERATION

Its definition comes from the literal union of the concepts of "tele" - at a distance - and "presence": presence at a distance.

Within this VR model, the sensors are controlled from a distance by the user, while manipulating a robot, drone, submarine, or other machine designed for this technology. TYPES OF VIRTUAL REALITY GLASSES

Most systems and types of VR glasses (also called Virtual Reality Lenses) today need a personal computer to operate them. HOW DO WE GET TO VR? VIRTUAL REALITY STORY

The concept of virtual reality has appeared in a more or less lucid way in our culture since the 1950s. Morton Heilig, - many times calling the father of virtual reality - an American filmmaker who created the Sensorama in the ‘60s; He was the first to develop a console that combined various sensory stimuli: a stereoscopic screen, stereo speakers, odor emitters, fans, and a vibrating chair.

All these stimuli were combined to give the user the more or less immersive experience of rolling a bicycle through the streets of Brooklyn. Although a bit rustic and limited in budget, the Sensorama was the true start of VR technology.

From then on, individuals and companies began to innovate with the aim of capturing this ideal science fiction experience. This is how in 1961 the first prototypes of head-mounted display (HDM), or virtual reality glasses, improvised by Philco engineers emerged, creating the first versions of what we know today as “telepresence”.

In 1968, renowned computer scientist Ivan Sutherland created and introduced the “Final Screen” or “Sword of Damocles,” which despite being primitive in terms of user interface (UI) and realism, was the first to track the movements of the user's head, changing the perspective displayed on the screen based on them.

However, it was not until 1989 when the term enters our daily speech, thanks to the projects and undertakings and vast literary works of the philosopher, scientist, computer writer and musician, Jaron Lanier.

VIRTUAL REALITY VS. AUGMENTED REALITY: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

This is a point worth clarifying, due to the confusion it creates.

Generally speaking, augmented reality is an image, seen live through a device such as a camera or smartphone, which adds digital elements; while virtual reality, as we already know, involves a certain degree of immersion that isolates the physical space around it. Examples of the first there are thousands, ranging from entire worlds such as that of Pokemon Go, to scenarios as "simple" as Snapchat filters.

In this sense, despite the fact that RA and VR are similar in the design of their devices, they do differ strongly in the objective they have and how they achieve it: VR replaces immediate reality; takes the user elsewhere; while AR adds to reality by projecting information "on top" of what is being visualized.
