Preventative Profile

We often look at the issue of unlawful detention "after the fact." What are the ways citizens with rights can get ahead of the game? How can those at risk use film and social media platforms to create a Preventative Profile on their terms?

In the same way Kickstarter requires users to tell comprehensive stories through text, photos, and videos--what if we created a social platform for those at risk of unlawful detention to tell their life stories on a site called Preventative Profile?

Individuals would build out their profiles in order to show a complete and open view of who they are and what they do. In the same way we have friends on Facebook or receive recommendations on LinkedIn, Preventative Profile could allow teachers, bosses, colleagues, friends, and families to vouch for an individual.

Imagine someone "at risk" is travelling, users could build on their profile with up-to-date videos and status updates to serve as current testimonials. This could serve as both a means to keep a live feed on an individual's whereabouts for families and as a way to proactively inform the local community and human rights defenders of the cases of those "at risk." Perhaps HRD's and lawyers could comment on an individual's profile-providing specific suggestions to help users stay informed of their rights.

In the case that an individual is unlawfully detained, their Preventative Profile could become a campaign home page. Families and supporters could use the stories, videos, and status updates to create awareness and as material to connect with human rights defenders to ask for help.

What kind of resources are needed to get this idea off the ground and/or support it over time?

Social network/online platform (Preventative Profile could connect to other social media sites to create a more comprehensive portrait.)

How could this idea also be adapted to work in low-tech situations?

I could imagine this idea working physically on a pin-board in community centers. Could we build a text-to-network type system, where individuals text their "status reports" to an online site managed by Amnesty International?

Hi Christine, thanks for your great idea! How might the Preventative Profile fit into a broader information ecology? Could this be used as an HRD tool?
