EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Imagine a farmer picking mangoes from his tree with a long stick and net, using his intuitive judgement of quality and taste based on fruit colour and size. Now, imagine a farmer not having to rely on his subjective judgement, yet being able to determine the right time to harvest and have all the information needed to sell a higher quality product to a better market for more money! That’s what MangoScan offers!!! MangoScan is a “Ready to Eat” fruit quality control kit, allowing mangoes to be harvest at an optimum level of juiciness and sweetness. It is an effective fruit quality testing technology driven by the needs of small-holders involved in mango trade, which is currently restricted because of unpredictable quality and often significant wastage. It helps determine the maturity stage of mangoes, allowing farmers decide exactly when to harvest, and thereby minimize post-harvest loss. The MangoScan comes with a package of low- and high-tech testing tools in a box that measure various quality parameters of mango including firmness, SSC, and size. The testing kit is available in two versions. The first one is a low-tech solution based on manuals, with testing methods that can be printed on paper, read out by farmers and easily practiced. The second version comes with a combination of high-tech fruit quality testing tools. The technology kit offers solution that fits the needs of both farmers and buyers (looking for high quality).

WHO BENEFITS?

This innovation will benefit all actors across the mango value chain, from farmers till consumers. Mango farmers and traders will benefit by marketing and offering guaranteed improved quality mangoes at higher prices. At the same time, less wastage will result in reduced cost of production and thereby higher margins. Consumers will enjoy improved quality and tastier mangoes

WHERE WILL YOUR IDEA BE IMPLEMENTED?

Bangladesh

ARE YOU IMPLEMENTING IN AN ELIGIBLE COUNTRY?

  • Yes

EXPERTISE IN SECTOR

  • I’ve worked in a sector related to my idea for over a year

EXPERIENCE IN IMPLEMENTATION COUNTRY(IES)

  • Yes, for more than one year.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOU!

The Just Farming is an agro-business that ensures smallholders are placed at the heart of high value supply chains to retailers, food processors and importers. One of the products Just Farming is offering is mango, both for export and domestic retail and processing.

IS THIS IDEA NEW FOR YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION?

This is a new idea for Just Farming. However, it plays a complimentary function to our existing business. We strive to deliver high-quality produce from small-holders to institutional buyers. MangoScan, if implemented, will add great value by helping our suppliers determine the exact time of harvest and guarantee high-quality and tasty mangoes for our valued customers.

HOW IS YOUR IDEA UNIQUE?

MangoScan is first of its kind in the country. Our partnership with Single Spark and Crosswise Works puts us at an advantage over other players in Bangladesh market. Our own experience and expertise in mango production helps in providing useful insights and information to our technical partner to develop and continuously improve on the idea. Every other organization still relies on subjective judgement of mango ripeness and quality. We will be the pioneer in introducing an affordable objective solution to testing mango quality for small-farmers. This makes our idea very unique, especially in the context of Bangladesh.

WHO WILL IMPLEMENT THIS IDEA?

Each partner of the consortium has very specific and significant role in developing MangoScan. Single Sparks will bring in international expertise and introduce the business-in-a-box concept. Crosswise Works will build network with international partners and bring in relevant knowledge and expertise from them. In consultation with Single Spark, Just Farming will develop a customized version of the technology that is tailtailored to local needs and adapted to local context.

HOW HAS YOUR IDEA CHANGED BECAUSE OF BENEFICIARY FEEDBACK?

Mango growers that we have spoken to, have shown keen interest in the proposed idea. They have all agreed that the technology will certainly help them get a better position and price in the market place. However, they feel that it would be more beneficial if the device can help them detect a few additional essential factors. Based on their suggestion and feedback, we have modified our idea to include identification of pest attack at the earliest and determine presence of any pesticide or carbide/formalin on the mangoes during harvest. This will help support them having an authentic claim on pesticide and chemical-free mangoes and thereby gain credibility and better price in the local as well as export market.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR UNANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS IDEA?

We are yet to figure out the exact technical specifications and pricing of the product. We are exploring means to keep the toolkit as simple and as affordable for small farmers as possible. At the same time, we still need to find out if it is feasible for the device to identify pest attack and determine presence of chemicals during harvest. Lastly, we need to work out an effective distribution plan for the toolkit as well.

WHY DO YOU THINK THE PROBLEM YOUR IDEA SOLVES FOR HASN'T BEEN SOLVED YET?

The current market scenario is more advantageous towards the traders. Since the mango growers have no objective means to guarantee the quality of their produce, they cannot claim a desired price for the same. Mango traders determine the price of mangoes based on their assessment and the farmer has to accept whatever he is offered, often at a loss. MangoScan will give an upper hand to mango growers who can now claim the high quality of their produce with enough credibility. This will enhance their negotiation power, earning them improved market prices.

WHAT WOULD YOU ULTIMATELY LIKE TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS IDEA? WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP TO GET THERE?

This innovation will indeed benefit all actors across the mango value chain, from farmers till consumers. Mango farmers and traders will benefit by marketing and offering guaranteed improved quality mangoes at higher prices. JustFarming, we will pay farmers higher price. We can offtake a certain amount and deliver to a market that demands better quality. Consumers will enjoy improved quality and tastier mangoes.

MEMBERS OF MY TEAM HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER FOR:

  • Between 6 months and a year

MY INTENDED BENEFICIARIES ARE:

  • More than 500 km from where our team does most of its work

MY ORGANIZATION'S OPERATING BUDGET FOR 2015 WAS:

  • Under $100,000

Bangladesh is the eighth largest producer of mangoes in the World, with an annual production of 1 million MT. As many as 150,000 farmers depend on mango production for their livelihoods. More and more customers, both home and abroad, are demanding high quality and tasty Bangladeshi mango varieties. Yet, few or no farmers have means to objectively measure quality and/or assess appropriate harvest time. Unpredictable and disorganized supply chain result in weak negotiation position for small farmers against bigger traders.

Just Farming and Crosswise Works is partnering with Single Sparks to introduce MangoScan to objectively measure quality of mangoes that will aid grading and sorting on the farmers’ field itself. In addition to testing key parameters of fruit quality, MangoScan is able to tell maturity stage of mangoes, letting farmers decide when exactly to harvest.

The sugar level in fruits is, among other issues, related to the dry matter content. A product with a higher dry matter value will provide higher sugar content at the end, i.e tastier mangoes. Based on the quality and taste, farmers can easily sort their produce on field and target segregate market.

This “Ready to Eat” quality control kit for mangoes judges when a mango should be delivered to the supermarket, because it is ready to eat. Being able to offer high quality product improves bargaining power of mango growers, which, in turn, bring them higher prices, resulting in better income and improved livelihoods.

All in all, MangoScan is a recent and timely innovation that allows small-holders to assess the quality of mango and determine the exact time of harvest, thereby offering a solution to food waste and quality determination challenges in the mango value chain in Bangladesh.

For this innovation, we have partnered with Crosswise Works and Single Spark. They add value by understanding the needs of entrepreneurs and develop practical, low-cost tools that are adapted to local circumstances anywhere in the world. The business-in-a-box concept is tailored to local needs and based on local feasibility studies done by (micro)-entrepreneurs.

This is such a fantastic idea!

I reckon that the user would not be the farmers but harvesters for off-takers. True?

Is there thinking on utilization of this in Africa?

Keep me posted!
