EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

KYP is a smart phone based App powered by a central database and a real time sync (off line and on line) feature. With the KYP App, farmers will have easy access to information on the sources of high-quality inputs materials for better harvest and they will also have better chance to reduce the waste and spill across the crop cycle hence value chain. With the KYP, farmers and input dealers are allowed to upload profile picture or shop picture along with their basic information. In the areas with unstable internet connection, the information is available offline through the help of a web dashboard and through the APPS offline. Users can check the data before they submit them. After confirmation, users can upload data to the App’s resident database. Sync option on the landing screen allows users to sync their data offline with the built-in central database. To maintain data integrity, unique usernames and passwords are created only from the admin panel. Users will receive usernames and passwords by mail along with the levels of authority that enables them to access to their local agricultural information through the App. The system’s back-end is maintained by both WinMiaki and partner organizations to ensure the stability. The partners are well informed about the features and operation of the KYP which is designed not only for Headquarters, but also for field level operatives PLEASE SEE ATTACHMENT: User Experience Map and Feedback on your User Experience Map.

WHO BENEFITS?

The primarily beneficiaries of this App are the LSP-Local Service Providers like Paikers (Input Retailers), Arothder (Traders) and the marginal & small holder farmers/ beneficiaries of NGOs. With the help of KYP App the whole market will ensure a win-win situation for local business communities and small scale farmers to reduce food waste and spoilage at considerable rates.

WHERE WILL YOUR IDEA BE IMPLEMENTED?

Bangladesh

ARE YOU IMPLEMENTING IN AN ELIGIBLE COUNTRY?

  • Yes

EXPERTISE IN SECTOR

  • I’ve worked in a sector related to my idea for over a year

EXPERIENCE IN IMPLEMENTATION COUNTRY(IES)

  • Yes, for more than one year.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOU!

WinMiaki Ltd. is an organization working for development of Agri sector through different ICT channels. Yes, we are looking for collaboration with the development partners. We work with Oxfam, WorldFish, Dhaka Ahsania Mission, Practical Acton, Katalyst, IRRI, BARI etc. We are based in Bangladesh.

IS THIS IDEA NEW FOR YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION?

This is a new idea conceived and developed by WinMiaki ltd. KYP is a mobile App developed as a way to keep record information of a group of people related to farming business sectors that will assist farmers to get better their way of farming to make available strategic and information support, allowing them to reach latest information & technologies from the remote areas through user groups. We have discovered that every NGO intervention has its own database of beneficiaries as well as supply chain; by providing a common database we optimize the access to resources and reduce the inefficiencies on segmented information. KYP is a way in which farmers and other market actors can search for information. This apps will also help the farmers to be connected with the input and output market to avail the high quality agri input (seed, fertilizer, pesticides etc.) and sell the harvest for the best possible price. These are the beauty of this KYP that differs from what we are already doing -linking the farmers with markets developing the existing market system.

HOW IS YOUR IDEA UNIQUE?

There is not a single similar initiative available in Bangladesh like our idea/ initiative. KYP is the first ever farmers networking App - The ICT Bridge between farmers and local market. It is also possible to provide pre-planting information to the farmers by KYP. It is an unique idea other than those are we doing now. KYP is a system that helps the farmers to access updated agri info on available quality inputs. On the other hand farmers will be able to raise their bargaining capacity to sell their products to the local traders at a better price. This is a unique advantages in market development system to implement this idea under win-win situation both for the market actors and the farmers.

WHO WILL IMPLEMENT THIS IDEA?

Initially WinMiaki (WML) UX team will provide necessary ToT to NGO Extension Workers on KYP to disseminate the idea at the group level and local input suppliers. In case of new requirement from field, WML will engage resources to make it happen. WML will perform maintaining the Application service along with call center service (if necessary) to the beneficiaries. Partners will mobilize their field force to make this service be introduced and available for their own beneficiary.

HOW HAS YOUR IDEA CHANGED BECAUSE OF BENEFICIARY FEEDBACK?

WinMiaki gives proper value to the user feedback. Beneficiary feedback is very important to develop and redesign the product. It is a continuous process that we follow the feedback from our beneficiaries about KYP. This App has been developed through different trial and error. We give proper emphasis on R&D (Research and Development) and our UX (User Experience) team conducted different FGD (Focus Group Discussion) and interviewed our intended beneficiaries about this service and accordingly we developed the service. Recently we are working in KYP to change its English font to Bengali considering the literacy rate feedback from the user end. And it would follow this strategy in future to develop and redesign this product/ service as per the feedback received from our intended beneficiaries in future.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR UNANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS IDEA?

We believe KYP-Krishi Yellow Page is a unique idea to connect the farmers with the market to have necessary information. We also need further research on user experience and feedback loops so that more beneficiaries can be accessed and have feedback and opinion for its further development. We are yet to find the answer towards commercialization of KYP as a service in a broader market.

WHY DO YOU THINK THE PROBLEM YOUR IDEA SOLVES FOR HASN'T BEEN SOLVED YET?

Krishi Yellow Page will help small holder farmers to connect with markets for better production & business growth with user-generated info improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers by reducing food waste and spoilage? Through this idea small holder farmers will get the opportunity to connect with the input and output market. This would help the farmers to have the quality input materials which will ensure the good harvest. Empowering Small Scale Farmers through access to information on local market trends via ICT is very much possible in my county Bangladesh but it needs necessary support to bring the idea at the user level.

WHAT WOULD YOU ULTIMATELY LIKE TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS IDEA? WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP TO GET THERE?

With the help of KYP, the farmers will able to know the availability of quality input materials at his locality from his/ her mobile phone. On the other hand farmers would be able to connect with the local traders/ buyers to sell his harvest at considerable better price avoiding the syndicate and increasing his bargaining capacity. WinMiaki would like to work with the Private Sectors, PNGOs and Govt. to make available this idea at the farmers level to reducing food waste and spoilage?

MEMBERS OF MY TEAM HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER FOR:

  • More than a year

MY INTENDED BENEFICIARIES ARE:

  • Within in 500 km of where our team does most of its work

MY ORGANIZATION'S OPERATING BUDGET FOR 2015 WAS:

  • Between $100,000 and $500,000

Krishi is a Bengali word; it means 'agriculture'. WinMiaki is proposing the idea of ‘KYP-Krishi Yellow Page’ empowering the small scale farmers linking them with the markets for business growth and uplift their livelihoods. KYP is the way where farmers and other local/ regional market actors (Paiker –input Retailers, Arothder -Traders, and Distributors etc.) can search data and also update their own inputted data. It is mainly for those people who are related to the Agriculture- regardless producer and input supplier. Agriculture is a perishable and season specific sector, where KYP can play a very important role to properly manage the value chain management activities. With the help of KYP, the farmers will able to know the availability of quality input materials like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides etc. at his locality from his/ her mobile phone. On the other hand farmers would be able to connect with the local traders/ buyers to sell his harvest at considerable better price avoiding the syndicate and increasing his bargaining capacity. Because with the help of KYP the farmers may avail other alternatives to search the list of other buyers. This connectivity will help the farmers to take the right decision to sell out their harvest in right time reducing the waste and spoilage –both in during production and marketing cycle. By improving access to information KYP will help the farmers to ensure the supply chain of the quality inputs materials that will lead to a good harvest.

Currently mobile phone are the right choice to help the small holder farmers to be connected to the main stream of development. Its immense opportunity to empower poor people and/or small scale farmers in a developing country like Bangladesh. Mobile phones are a quick and safe way to reach small scale farmers; the use of smart phone is increasing day by day as the are available in the market at reasonable low prices. Considering all of these opportunities, WinMiaki has developed this idea of KYP -a mobile based Apps that will help the farmers with his/ her business community/ local/ regional level exploring the business growth and opportunities.

WinMiaki needs necessary support to identify the best way to promote this idea at the farmers/ producers’ level and scaling the product as well as identifying a sustainable business model, we have a plan to work with our Partners/ Development organization/ NGOs to extend the benefits of KYP to the farmers through proper facilitation process. However the scaling of this proposed idea on KYP depends on the experience of the user/ small holder farmers in sustainable/ commercial practices acquired via the information of this app . There is a need of research to develop the ICT based services, which are reliable and trustworthy for small scale farmers to change their behavior/ attitude about this kind of services. If the small scale farmers benefits using different ICT based services like KYP, it would empower them to be connected with other facilities accessing to right information and uplift their livelihoods while willingness to pay could be achieved in exchange of this uplifting.

Hi Anwarul!

Below is some feedback from the Amplify team and our experts. We look forward to reading your responses!

- Could you tell us more about how you incorporated feedback from farmers into your design?

- Help us understand about specifically what stage your idea is currently in. Are you already implementing this app in your community? Do you have a preliminary version of your app?

- The area you are targeting with your solution holds great promise for smallholder farmers, though there are many obstacles that must be addressed to unlock its potential. You mention some (like low literacy) and suggest collaboration with several partner organizations working on the ground. How do you intend to build a relationship with these partners? And then integrate your solution with these partners?

- We love the the way your idea links evidence to help farmers improve their methods. You mention some issues with privacy and data protection - beyond usernames, how will you protect the privacy of farmers contributing to the platform? Will their comments be de-identified?

- What are your incentives for early adopters of this app? How will you ensure that you reach sufficient scale to make the information about buyers and sellers really worthwhile?

- What will make these NGOs want to use this system? Is it going to be easier? From a viability aspect, could you learn from Angie’s List, or other organizations, where aspects of its platform content is subscription based?

We value the user feedback and their opinion about our services. We have UX (User Experience) Team, they go to the field and take the feedback from the user end about the service through one to one discussion, FGD-Focus Group Discussion or interacting with the different stakeholders. This is a continuous process we follow. We incorporate these feedback/ opinion to design/ redesign our services.

- Help us understand about specifically what stage your idea is currently in. Are you already implementing this app in your community? Do you have a preliminary version of your app?

Yes, right now we have developed the first version of this KYP App and currently implementing with USAID project areas in the Southern part of Bangladesh

- The area you are targeting with your solution holds great promise for smallholder farmers, though there are many obstacles that must be addressed to unlock its potential. You mention some (like low literacy) and suggest collaboration with several partner organizations working on the ground. How do you intend to build a relationship with these partners? We have already built up relationship with some INGO (International Organization) and NGO (Local NGOs) and implementing some project at the field level under partnership modality. In fist hand we have to take help from the PNGOs (Partner Organizations) to disseminate this idea at the field level. We have a plan to provide ToT (Training of the Tutor) for the PNGOs Field Staff/ Extension Workers who directly work with the farmers at the group level. We need necessary support to execute this operational task to implement this idea at the field level.

- We love the the way your idea links evidence to help farmers improve their methods. You mention some issues with privacy and data protection - beyond usernames, how will you protect the privacy of farmers contributing to the platform? Will their comments be de-identified?

KYP-Krishi Yellow Page will help the farmers to connect with the input and our market actors around his locality. Retailers/ LSP-Local Service Provides/ traders will upload his/ her business and contact information in KYP with their own interest. They could be provided with password and initially we have to monitor this though the help of PNGO field staff.

- What are your incentives for early adopters of this app? How will you ensure that you reach sufficient scale to make the information about buyers and sellers really worthwhile?

For the early adopters there will be no charge involved or premium to disseminate the idea at the farmers’ level. We believe it will help the farmers to have the quality inputs and increase his/ her bargaining capacity sell out his harvest with a better price and this will reach sufficient scale.

- What will make these NGOs want to use this system? Is it going to be easier? From a viability aspect, could you learn from Angie’s List, or other organizations, where aspects of its platform content is subscription based?

Local NGOs are based at the field level. So it woudl be better to take their support initially to disseminate the idea at the field level. When the much farmers will be aware about this service we will directly work with the farmers. Considering the sustainability issues we could also work with the private sectors who deals the quality inputs like quality seed, fertilizers, pesticides etc.

Hi Anwarul!
Thanks for the detailed response. Is there a place were we can see the version of the app that you've already developed? Could you share a little more about the USAID project that is using it? Which NGO/INGO/PNGO are you partnered with to do that? What are you learning?
Thanks!

It is available at Google Play Store, named "Krishi Yellow Page".
You can't enter/ update any data through this without credential. We gave that credential to our clients (USAID projects) only. But you can easily search and explore the content. For the first time usage, you have to push the central circle button at the landing page to sync the App's data with the server. Depending on your internet bandwidth and device spec, it may take up to 5 mins to sync data with server.

We are working with the USAID project in Southern part of Bangladesh. For further referene you can contact Hendrik Jan Keus, Chief of the Party -(USAID-AIN), WorldFish Center, Email: HJ.Keus@cgiar.org
