EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Farmers in Nigeria do both farming and selling. While they are very competent in farming, they usually struggle with selling due to lack of access to a large consumer base; particularly because most of them (the farmers) are rural dwellers, less educated and unskilled marketers. Market Hub will fill this gap by scouting for (product-specific) consumers in various places and market the farm produce to a wider consumer base. The Market Hub will maintain a database of clients i.e. famers (location, type of farm, production capacity etc.) and consumers (individual and corporate); process and package products to be presentable and attractive; and negotiate fair prices to encourage patronage without profit loss. The Hub will generate and disseminate timely market information like availability of products and their prices, products in high demand, stock level etc. to clients. Such feedback will help farmers to focus on producing what is needed instead of what they prefer (which is often the case) hence aiding sales, increased turnover and profit.

WHO BENEFITS?

The Benefits are cross cutting as it will benefit the Farmers, Customers, the economy of the community and the State; and on a larger scale the Country. The Farmer benefits through reduction in losses due to food decay,Improved data and information transmission for evidence-based decision making for the state. Increased access to market for small-scale and subsistent farmers. Boosted agricultural activities at all levels; and Improved livelihood for small-scale and peasant farmers.

Subsistent harvesting and unsold farm produce are two major determinants of food waste and spoilage in Nigeria. Mature or ripe farm produce may decay in the farm if farmers do not harvest them. Usually, small-scale farmers tend to harvest only the amount they need to feed their families in addition to the quantity they will be able to sell, leaving the unharvested at risk of decay. Also, food decay occurs post-harvest especially when not well preserved or consumed by ‘consumers’. These suggest that to reduce food waste and spoilage in Nigeria, we must enable farmers to achieve maximum harvest and sale of mature farm produce. If there is more harvest and fewer sales, we risk post-harvest wastage. Increased sales rate therefore appears to be the logical solution as sales will drive more harvest hence reducing both pre- and post-harvest food decay in the hands of small-scale farmers.
