EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

SokoHuru Food Hub is a pooled farm-to-business delivery system that is driven by the needs of farmers and buyers. The concept is a new and innovative approach to local food distribution challenges in Kenya. The SokoHuru Food Hubs provide aggregation, packaging, storage, value addition, marketing and distribution services to smallholder farmers in target counties, connecting them to restaurants, groceries and supermakets, and institutional kitchens. Problem solved: The domestic fresh market in Kenya is growing at an impressive rate. Continued high rates of urbanization coupled with a rising per capita incomes continue to drive increases in consumer demand. Consumer demand for sustainably grown local agricultural products offers unprecedented opportunity for greater financial viability of small-scale farmers. At the supply end, farmers would love to link more effectively to the consumer market but lack access to these markets (this includes knowledge of where and at what price to sell and connectivity to honest market agents). To take full advantage of the opportunity, farmers need to improve their direct markets and expand into wholesale and/or intermediated markets that allow access to larger buyers and more consumers. The SokoHuru Food Hubs make it possible for smallscale farmers to gain entry into larger-volume markets that have been difficult or impossible for producers to access on their own.

WHO BENEFITS?

The SokoHuru Food Hubs offer an exciting bridge between food producers and consumers, providing a mutually beneficial relationship across both ends of the food system. Small-scale farmers can safely concentrate on their core strength of farming and reap benefits. The hub is a one-stop shop for buyers, they are able to buy in bulk, at local wholesale prices, and have the security that what they want will be consistently available in the size and packaging of industry standards.

We are a start-up owned by a small mother company- EcoScout. The idea was launched in June 2015, with the opening of the first hub. We’ve been working on our own and financed from personal savings. We’re looking for a collaborator, capital injection and capacity building in business management.

SokoHuru Food Hubs are located in Nairobi, Kenya and represent a pooled farm-to-business delivery system that is driven by the needs of farmers and buyers. SokoHuru (term means free markets in Swahili) works with a network of smallholder farmers producing diverse crops grown in a safe and environmentally friendly way. At the Hub, every item receives the SokoHuru stamp, which is recognized and trusted. The food is aggregated and stored, and eventually marketed and distributed. The facilities at the hub provide an opportunity for value addition particularly cleaning, cooling, and ripening.
