EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

1.) Farmer Joseph notices a new pest he hasn't seen before on his maize crop 2.) He snaps a picture with his mobile phone or answers 5 basic diagnostic questions via an SMS Pocket Crop Doctor survey 3.) Pocket Crop Doctor references this information against an extensive agronomic database to provide some ideas as to what the problem could be, in short, basic text. If farmers are illiterate, they can listen to the text, or simply wait for the "Doctor Call" 4.) Within 1 hour, a certified agronomist or "Crop Doctor" reviews the initial information Farmer Joseph has submitted, and asks further questions and shares information and tips via call or text (all free to Farmer Joseph) 5.) Pocket Crop Doctor tracks patterns of reports from a given area. If several farmers near each other report the same or similar issue, all farmers in the area are notified via SMS. This allows early warning and detection of crop ailments and pests 6.) Even if Farmer Joseph doesn't notice an ailment on his crop, Pocket Crop Doctor can still send him agronomic tips to improve the productivity of his crops, customized based on a quick SMS survey. Pocket Crop Doctor will also notify him of impending weather events. Finally, he can use it to share information and opportunities with other farmers in the area. He can SMS Pocket Crop Doctor if he has unused fertilizer to sell. Pocket Crop Doctor will only send his message to farmers in his area, who can SMS back.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOU!

I am an individual - In my day job I am a Program Officer with the Millennium Challenge Corporation, working on programs in Zambia, Niger, and the Philippines. Several of my projects deal directly with smallholder farmers and the rural sector.

Farmers in remote areas have difficulty accessing the extension services and specialized knowledge they need to grow productive crops and manage crop diseases, which can wipe out their livelihoods. Pocket Crop Doctor addresses this issue by allowing them to take a picture, answer an easy SMS-based survey, or verbally answer a survey based on voice recognition technology to provide basic diagnostic information on their crops. Pocket Crop Doctor first references this information against a comprehensive database to provide a rapid "triage" response, followed shortly by a "Doctor's Call" from a real, experienced agronomist who will provide detailed advice based on the initial intake information and a conversation with the farmer (via phone or SMS). Pocket Crop Doctor will also alert farmers of other pests and diseases reported in their area, as well as impending weather events that may threaten their crops, via SMS. Pocket Crop Doctor can also provide customized agronomic tips for farmers (eg. proper spacing, rotation, and other practices) based on basic information they input about what crops they plant, where, and when.
