The idea is to train farmers on the importance of value addition to cassava while practically carrying out raw cassava slicing and eventual drying with a solar drier.
This will provide an opportunity to dry cassava within one day as oppossed to the current practice of selling raw whole cassava to local dealers who are currently over exploiting farmers. A few hours delay to reach the market also makes the dealers loss great quantities of cassava resulting from fungial attack.
The idea is harvest cassava, with women and youth peel and wash the cassava, then crush it to obtain liquid that can be converted into starch/glue. The remaining flour will be instantly dried with a solar drier. Another option is to immediately slice peeled and raw cassava into pieces that will be insttantly dried on a solar drier.
This idea will solve the problem of farmer exploitation, cassava rotting and fungial attack that affects the quality of cassava flour.Vulnerable rural communities will be able to afford food through out the year as well as income from dried cassava sales.
This project will benefit vulnerable rural women and youth, who grow cassava for both subsistance and commercial purpose. These grow gardens of cassava that matures in 6-24 months depending on the variety. They live in temporary and semi-permanent dwellings surving on less that 1$ per day.
