Please elaborate on your proposed solution to the challenge in no more than 300 words.

Greta Thunberg currently shows how a topic can gain media attention. Irrespective of whether a PR system is behind it or not, the result is that worldwide the public is talking about climate change. Greta manages to summarize tons of information to concise and simple messages and carries them into the world. This should also be achieved for atopic dermatitis, a topic that one-fifth of all children and one-tenth of adults globally affects (McMahon 2019). Through media attention the understanding of atopic dermatitis, its causes and symptoms would be increased and also children would be informed about the topic in order to reduce mobbing. If one recalls the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which has also attracted enormous worldwide attention and raised awareness, it can be seen that a viral charity challenge would be an alternative way to receive attention and at the same time collect donations for the research of atopic dermatitis. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raised $220 million and enhanced the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research (Forbes 2015, Business Insider 2015, The Washington Post 2015). A World Atopic Eczema Day already exists. However, this day could be further expanded, as it is particularly important that those affected can share their experiences, exchange their knowledge and learn more about their own disease. This empowers people to feel more self-confident as they are not alone, feel more supported, and build up a sense of cohesion through the AD community.

What is the name of your organization?

University of Technology Sydney. However, the ideas presented above represent my own and individual views and proposals. They do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the University of Technology Sydney.

Where are you and your organization based?

Sydney, Australia

Please provide a description of your organization.

The University of Technology Sydney is Australia's #1 Young University, focused on making a difference through leading research, and inspiring education. In order to combine above ideas, I would propose to create a project at the University of Technology Sydney with for example students who are studying the Master of Not-for-Profit and Social Enterprise Management and possibly even involving students with other scientific background to evolve synergy effects.
