Eliminate AD - eliminate bullying
The appearance of AD on the skin is the cause for people (especially young people) who bully them as they appear to be different.
Please elaborate on your proposed solution to the challenge in no more than 300 words.
I am not sure we will ever stop all bullying. However, we can help educate people about bullying and AD. Education will be a necessary component to help inform people about bullying and the long term effects of bullying, but science will try and help answer “how do we help fight AD”. We don’t know the exact cause of atopic dermatitis. Researchers do know that a combination of genetics and other factors are involved. When a substance from inside or outside the body triggers the immune system, it over-reacts and produces inflammation. It is this inflammation that causes the skin to become red, rashy and itchy. This is why many people with atopic dermatitis have very dry and infection-prone skin. The appearance of AD on the skin is the cause for people (especially young people) who bully them as they appear to be different.
At our company, QuadSil Inc, we are developing a hand sanitizing gel to replace alcohol containing hand sanitizers that dry and irritate the skin. Our skin soothing gel has a 4-6 log kill against a variety of bacteria, virus and fungus. It is easy to apply, leaves the skin soft and hydrated while providing a level of hydrophobic nature on skin for at least 4-8 hours. While we have not performed specific clinical studies on AD, some of the clinical testing has demonstrated improvement in alleviating the same issues with eczema, athlete’s foot fungus, diaper rash and poison ivy.
