What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

Rural South African are impacted by unemployment and non-development in the area. The problem I am trying to solve is influenced by the issue of municipality and government politics whereby there is no service delivery in the community, corruption has taken place in the community and we believe that working a civil society we will have the fulfillment of life that every individual need. There is also an arising issues once in a while of residence becoming frustrated of the social issues such as unemployment and attack non-South Africans because they believe that they are in their country to take their employment opportunities while they can work together to exchange skills be able to provide for themselves to fight the depressions and anxiety that lead the youth to commit suicide and have the capacity to be independent through the empowerment workshops, mental health and life skills programs, as well as skills development ad entrepreneurship programs. the solution to this problem is that the multipurpose centre or community development centre be implemented so that the needs of the community to be fulfilled are met so that they can all gain their dignity, live joyfully and have opportunity to explore their talents and potential by realizing their skills and learning from one another. furthermore, have the potential of transferring those skills to the next generation, the community will realise education is important but also skills and talents can benefit them to generate income and be where they want to be, they can not depend on someone or corporate employment to live the life they want to live, they have potential and ability to change their living circumstances. So, multipurpose centre with skills development training centre, workshops and psychosocial and emotional activities that will be provided there will have an impact on the community.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

Dennilton is a small developing village in Sekhukhune District Municipality in Limpopo Province of South Africa, it is developing at a snail’s pace because of lack of government support. It is the village of black residents and rich in diversity as South Africa consists of eleven languages and various tribes, the dominating tribes are Pedi, Ndebele, and Zulu. The community is still led by chiefs’ incorporation of the municipality to be presented in the government.

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

Bringing together South Africans and Non-South Africans together will help with social integration and combat xenophobia. Somalians will be knowledge partners about entrepreneurship or small enterprises and as well as Zimbabweans for skills development as part of social inclusion and cohesion through information sharing and skills development by sharing the skills they have with south Africans such as making zinc basin and kettles, carpentry and craftwork in the community to generate income.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

Hope, Joy, Dignity, and Platform for opportunities: The community multipurpose centre will primarily provide skills and development training, entrepreneurship training and linkage of occupation to relevant resources because the community lacks the resource and information about the mentioned above to sustain their livelihood. The community has a high rate of school dropouts and unemployed youth, which results in non-progressive of poverty alleviation and rural development and lack of personal development skills results in the increased rate of suicide cases in the community yearly. For people to receive a better living they must relocate to urban areas to find a fulfilling lifestyle and sustainable livelihood. In addition, psychosocial and emotional support will be provided through mental health and life skills workshops to reduce suicidal cases. Fulfillment for opportunities will be job creations and entrepreneurship.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

There are existing organizations in our community conducted by youth that promotes university enrolment support and theoretical career guidance. The idea proposed will create rural development by repurposing the existing abandoned facilities, poverty alleviation, reduction suicidal cases, as well as accommodating school dropouts and unemployed youth because their needs that bring joy and fulfillment are not met due to their family's financial circumstances and not qualify to enroll in higher educational institutions, for instance, university. The idea will create a positive change by providing financial stability and improve personal development and life skills, as they will be able to deal with their social issues and mental wellbeing. Overall, it will break the generational poverty chain and there will be social integration between South african and Non South African.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

the Idea is important to the community because there is no development in the rural area and there is youth potential is derailed by being too dependent on the government's services which are not delivered and it was also inspired by seeing that the community has infrastructures that are abandoned and not utilizes and there is much more that can be done with those buildings to develop and close the gaps identified to meet the needs of the community, which most of them were not aware of, and all youth believe that they have to relocate to urban areas for better life and to get fulfillment while they have an ability to change the community by using the existing resources or making use of what they have to get what they need to live fully. Non- South Africans have skills when shared there will be a benefit of growth in the community as they are human resoruces and finacially too.

The group is currently in planning to implement the idea proposed. we are currently building relationships with organization and companies we see potential and that will contribute to making the idea a success. We are also running a literacy project called Bula Puku Literacy Project focusing on English as part of building the children's confidence because the community has a challenge of illiteracy and when children reaching the opportunity to be exposed in other areas such as university when they are old, find it difficult to understand, communicate and present fluently in English. furthermore, English is a medium of instruction in South Africa it is important for everyone to speak and write in English.

Hi Delma Mashilwane, first off, congratulations on this idea. This is really awesome and you are welcome to the Bridgebuilder challenge 2019. Do you think South Africans are ready to stop xenophobic attacks against foreigners?

Photo of Delma Mashilwane

Hello and Thank you, I certainly believe that empowering them to see benefit of socialising with non south African and learn from them they will see that they are their fellow people, because already we are facing unemployment with or without non south Africans and staying allowing them to teach them what they know to generate income and be independent as they are they will see that the xenophobic attacks are not necessary.

By the way Delma,

Let me also mention something about this. We have been following the neqs here in Uganda. Sorry for what is happening. Sometimes I think some of our African couñtries were not ready to be independent from colonilists, because the things I see happening in our countries hinders development and growth. Weaknesses are mostly more than strengths. But I hope our interventions to empower the most sensitive group under the ages 15 - 36 or 40 will reduce such cases of rioting and so many things happening in our countries..otherwise if it wasn't the case of unemployment coupled with illiteracy, poverty and lack of skills to help them become self-sustaining..these things couldn't happen at any point.

Hi Olive,
I totally agree with you there Olive, that is the reason why I am working with children from primary school to teach them about literacy and encouraging them to read more and more so that they can be exposed more to what is happening around the world, because most of the children in the rural areas are taken cared of by grandparents who are unable to assist with school works and have brothers and sisters that drooped out of school due to reasons mentioned, poverty and unable to change their living circumstances because of lack of skills. focusing on that age group will definitely make a great change in our communities.

You really inspire me more, just by having this conversation with you, I can see that there is more that can be done and with proper planning and implementation plan we can really change people's lives.

Keep up the good work. Your country with you is really in good hands,I would also appreciate to add you to my team.
