What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

Model Resource Centre for promoting Entrepreneurship among the Youth in the semi-arid areas of Kenya will be implemented in Solio Village Internally displaced persons (IDPs) settlement scheme in Kieni East Sub-county. The IDPs were evicted from Mt. Kenya forest to facilitate reforestation. According to a report by the Ministry of State for Special Programmes, May 2011, 805 households were forcibly evicted from the Kieni forest one of the gazetted government forests in Central provinces, as an effort by the Government of Kenya to conserve water catchments and address illegal encroachment on protected lands. These people were allocated land to farm and settle in the semi arid areas of Kieni East Sub-county, but due to lack of proper policy and the fact that these areas are away from their original homes with probably different cultural backgrounds, they were not able to utilize the land fully ending up in poverty and hunger. The youth in this area are particularly affected by development challenges with disproportionately high levels of unemployment, insufficient access to education and professional training, intolerance and exclusion. Empowerment of these youth will uplift the livelihood of majority resource persons living in these areas.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

Solio farm in Kieni West part of Nyeri County, is a semi-arid areas that scarcely produce enough to sustain the IDP families therefore suffering from malnutrition, hunger and poverty due to lack of noble idea on how to utilize the land. The farming methods applied encourage soil degradation, leaving the land bear and unproductive

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

There is need to create awareness by enhancing the capacities on effects of global warming and climate change as well as the importance of biodiversity conservation in these areas. There is an urgent need to create biodiversity to facilitate sustainable agriculture through creation of awareness and understanding on climate change mitigations that can help create forest and sustainable agriculture to improve productivity in agro-ecosystems, coupled with agribusiness development. Consequently, youth unemployment in Kenya has reached alarming proportions, creating a dire need to develop personnel with technical skills thus promote small business enterprises. Entrepreneurship remains the engine of growth, with ability to turn an idea into reality, a new venture, a small business, that creates good-paying jobs; that puts rising economies on the path to prosperity and empowers people to come together and tackle our most pressing global problems, like climate change and poverty.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

The project if funded will offer informal education in a conducive environment for economic activities, through entrepreneurship development. It will create a social environment where the youth beneficiaries will feel valued, respected, encouraged, and supported, creating an opportunities to express their own creativity and be free to voice their opinions in decision-making. Through capacity building, their leadership and performance skills will be enhanced. The youth will participate in activities relevant to their own lives for skill development and overall positive development of self-identity.Empowerment of the youth contributes to local development and prosperity. Specifically for this project, the beneficiary youth will manage to improve the IDP settlement scheme using the gained skills and improve the community at large.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

Kieni Sub County being a semi-arid zone is prone to food insecurity due to scarcity of water and other resources. According to a survey conducted in Kieni Sub-county on “Community Asset Mapping for Rural Youth in Kenya”, by Fostering Resilience Initiative from Notre Dame University in partnership with ZiziAfrique Foundation and Foresight Manpower Consultants, it was reported that the area’s economic life relies primarily on agriculture with need to help the youth gain farming skills as well as value addition of farm produce, to enhance their livelihood (Neil, 2019). There is also need to connect smallholder farmers to markets, increase opportunities for rural employment and increase in productivity while reducing risk and vulnerability among the resource poor persons especially the youth who majority are jobless.

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

It is irrefutable that the complexity of climate change has affected livelihoods of communities in Kenya, with famine as a typical phenomenon characterized by government relief food aid and hundreds of related fatal results of starvation reported over the last 10 years. To enhance sustainable livelihoods, communities have deliberately taken charge of their own situations in collaboration with development agencies. In Kenya many internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been allocated land in the semi-arid areas, to farm and settle, but are not able to utilize it, ending up to poverty and hunger. An example is the IDPs relocated to Solio farm in Kieni West part of Nyeri County, a semi-arid areas that scarcely produce enough to sustain their families therefore suffering from malnutrition, hunger and poverty due to lack of noble idea on how to utilize the land. The farming methods applied encourage soil degradation, leaving the land bear and unproductive.

Hi Monica Mburu! i admire any design targeted at internally displaced persons. Sadly, disabled persons are worst hit in all cases of displacement, poverty, hunger, unemployment, destitution, illiteracy, etc. So, is there any provision in this design to accommodate them for entrepreneurial training?
