What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

The largest number of the Kakuma refugee population are young people whose future is at risk and languish in poverty due to lack of access to opportunities. Many of whom grew in a state of hopelessness, most of them take their refugee status as a life sentence and therefore do not push forward towards achieving or setting goals for themselves. This is also intensified by the fact that we have families who have been living in Kakuma refugee camp since it’s inception. Today, the global refugee population sums up to 70.8 million people of which more than half of this population are under the age of 18. Only 22% of refugee adolescences graduate from secondary school every year and only 1% go to university globally. In Kakuma Refugee, the situation is even worse with only a mere 2% of them proceeding to tertiary education. Most of them are left unemployed/economically inactive and have no access to more alternative opportunities. This situation is due to various reasons, and the ones we want to focus on is the lack of personal capacity building in the refugee’s school system and work opportunities for these refugees. Education is widely acknowledged as the most sustainable means for transforming and empowering refugees and host communities. Our transformational Hub will be a solar-powered shipping containers hub within the camp, where refugees and the host will have access to the most innovative skills. The teaching facilities will be provided through partnerships with worldwide and local ICT companies such as Tunapanda Institute based in Kenya. The other part of our solution is a very significant and very unique one: a platform where refugees who got resettled to third countries will be mobilized towards giving back to both refugee and communities that hosted them while living in refugee camps. The platform will enable us to create a responsible global refugee community that is willing to support our private refugee sponsorship to Canada.

Why Kakuma? In Kakuma, the education facilities are limited and the need for technical training and soft skills remain unmet. Why Canada? Canada envisions channeling refugees with employability skills through Canada’s economic-class immigration programs. Canadian employers look for 60% of soft skills and 40% of technical skills. Therefore, we believe and will work smart to achieve our objectives of creating employment for trainees and also connecting them with available jobs out there.

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

Our idea builds economic and peaceful bridge by promoting inclusive learning opportunities and access to innovative learning process for both refugee and host communities, in a bid to eradicate poverty. Participants will acquire soft skills, also known as life skills, are considered important not only in the workplace but also in our daily societal lives. Transferable skills are more needed than ever, and of course; they play an important role in building a more connected and loving community.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

Lack of capacity building among resident of both Kakuma refugee camp and host communities is the major human need that our idea is solving. HubUntu will serve as a community capacity building among refugee and host community members with access to innovative digital and life skills. We believe in community centeredness whereby every member of the community participates in solving problems facing his or her community. Our idea goes beyond meeting the basic needs because we are serving as a driving force that will enable them to take responsibilities for their own lives and the choices they make. This will be an opportunity for us to bring a message of hope, joy by ensuring them that there is still an opportunity to grow from all the challenges they have been facing. On the other hand, the idea will not only enhance their willingness to look and create opportunities for themselves, instead; it will energize them to pursue every opportunity that comes their way.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

The idea creates actionable impact by instilling servant leadership traits among refugee and host community members. The openness to serve Self and the Other will enable them to take responsibilities in their lives and their communities at large. Through our online platform which will serve as an innovative tool whereby our young refugees and host community members can market and sell skills learned from our programs; we will be able to avail opportunities and take them through the process of achieving the best. The idleness will have reduced and a great number of our participants will have received creative confidence that will allow them to make a positive social and economic impact in our communities. The community awareness and the design thinking process will enable every community member to see the need for social positive change and the importance of treasuring our differences.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

There is no doubt that empowering young refugees and the host community members with the power of innovative digital and life skills will have a real transformative impact in their entire well-being and also, enhance peace of both communities. We aim at creating an interconnected and loving community of responsive servant leaders who will be more concerned about the challenges facing their communities. Moreover, digital and life skills will enable them to fully utilize the various opportunities presented to them by the current fast-paced world of modern technology. We believe that this idea is very important because equipping young refugees with digital Knowledge and life skills is an essential factor to prepare a great generation that is going to work on helping their communities and countries. All in all, our online platform will serve as a global community where refugees will be informed and guided on opportunities available to them.

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

Kakuma refugee camp is home to thousands of displaced people from more than 20 countries. The estimated population living in the camp is 164,571 refugees among which the majority are from South Sudan (89,296), Somalia (42,273), Sudan (9,694) and DRC (9,673). Refugee incomes are low due to the fact that there are less income-generating opportunities available to them. This leads to a lack of information access, knowledge, and services which can enable them to earn a living. In this case, refugee’s unproductivity can be attributed to lack of access to the three most important elements necessary for social and economic development and those are information, infrastructure, and services. Consequently, the nature of subsistence has been in a state of limbo, dependent on others to find solutions to their plight.

How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)

Having lived in Kakuma refugee camp for 8 years; I witnessed the urgency of positive change among young refugee and as well, host community members. It motivated me to found URISE Initiative for Africa was due to the fact that I realized that there was more thing to be done for our communities. Even after I moved to Canada, our organization continue offering services to our communities. All this is possible in full support of our communities, young refugee volunteers and our partners. Moreover, we have witnessed most of our trainee thriving to make positive changes. In fact, we are confident enough that building of capacity and self-esteem among young men and women from both refugee and host communities will help them to realize the urgency and be able to make an influential contribution towards building a working, loving and united community of both refugee and host communities in Kakuma.

What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)

We have four main partners who will work alongside with us in implementing the idea. Two of them are based in Kenya and those are Xavier Project ( and Tunapanda Institute ( The other two are international and those are Sky School ( and the free reformed church which will help in addressing refugee sponsorship to Canada. The first three partners are our main support in delivering services in Kakuma refugee camp and they will be involved in ensuring successful delivery of our services. The fourth partner (Emmanuel Free Reformed Church) has shown great support in one of our private sponsorship for a refugee family that is currently waiting for the final procedures to be made and come to Canada. It will also help in building a loving global community committed to helping refugees with opportunities.

URISE Initiative for Africa

Tell us more about your group or organization [or lived experience as a displaced person?] (1000 characters)

From working with different organizations including UNHCR, we experienced enough that made us think of Civic engagement which served as a driving force towards giving back to our refugee communities. We then started URISE Initiative for Africa, a Community-Based Organization run by young refugees from different nationalities. URISE is currently running Enterprise training and ICT in partnership with Xavier Project ( and two Online courses: Peace-Building and English for changemakers in partnership with Sky School( The idea fits our organization because URISE has done the needs assessment and it has implemented Educational programs that impacted the lives of many young refugees. We believe to be the right group because of the resilience manifested by our members and the community we serve. Empowering refugees and ensuring that they are involved and own the project is part of the human-centeredness design.
