What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

Firstly, Nigeria currently has a housing deficit of about 22 million homes to meet within the next four years, in addition to these housing needs is the challenge of building collapse, communal clashes, banditry and terrorism which has resulted to loss of lives and properties. Furthermore, Nigeria has the second largest access deficit in the world in terms of Electrical Energy supply, which accounts to about 80 million people lacking access to grid electricity. In addition, 50 % of Nigerian cooking energy needs are met from firewood, in which an estimated 0.120 million metric tons of trees are fell daily to meet up this need; as such, Nigeria loses 410,000 hectares of her green land per year due to the felling of these trees. The idea works by achieving the construction and servicing of an eco-friendly and affordable housing units(Smart Plastic City) for displaced communities which will involve the use of Recycling wastes into non-load bearing building materials, components and elements, it will further incorporate clean energy sources such as Biogas and Biomass for cooking fuel as a source of cooking energy, and also a mini-grid solar system as Electrical energy generation source which will service the Plastic City. The Smart Plastic City will further incorporate other facilities such as a Health facility, School Facility, Recreation Facility, and Processing Facility for the farmers, Stores and shops, which we are working with partners to fully achieve.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

According to UNHCR, over 2.7 Million people have been displaced, including over 1.9 million internally displaced persons in Northern Nigeria. However the project will commence implementation in Odenin-gida Community in Nasarawa Toto LGA of Nasarawa State, Northern Nigeria. Nigeria is in dire need of a systemic solution, a country located on the Western Coast of Africa, with her young population of about 75.24% below 35 years out of about 200 million people.

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

Communities (Neighbors) are not accommodating, due to the fact that they lack basic amenities for their own personal survival and a further infringement would be detrimental. However, noticing that majority of these Neighbors are poor rural farmers, we came up with a Plastic City Initiative which will incorporate processing hubs to reduce their post-harvest loss, stop middle men exploitation and also help them enjoy facilities to improve their livelihood and help them accommodate others.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

The Etna Eco Taction is set to solve the following needs directly, (1) shelter (through the creation of our plastic city), (2) Cooking and Electrical Energy (through the creation of renewable energy sources, Biogas and Biomass), (3) Education, Good Health and well being (through the creation of a Health facility, School Facility, and Recreation Facility, within the plastic city), (4) Food (through the creation of a Processing Facility for the farmers, to help reduce post-harvest loss and ensure higher proceeds from farm produce)  Reduction in building construction cost to about 40%.  Rapid reduction in cost of cooking energy by 35% and reduction in cooking time by 50%.  Eliminating toxic smoke and wastes.  Utilization of wastes to create building materials.  Tackling good health and well-being, affordable and clean energy, industry, innovation and infrastructure, Sustainable cities and communities, life below water and land.  Women and rural farmers’ empowerment.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

We understand that acquisition of decent shelter, employment, productive activity, independent living and social activity are significant for potential realization. The implementation and the successful realization of the idea (Eco-friendly plastic city) will tremendously cause the following differences in the community. 1. The incorporation of housing units will meet the need of basic shelter. 2. Processing Facilities, will increase the income of farmers, farm produce, reduce post-harvest loss, stop exploitation and make sure that farmers are empowered. 3. Health facility within the plastic city, will ensure good health and wellbeing and also help reduce maternal and infant mortality. 4. School Facility will ensure basic education for the young ones. 5. Clean cooking energy and renewable energy source will reduce pollution, impact of chronic smoke exposure that cause about 4% of the global disease burden, as well as stop deforestation. Etc.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

A harsh, dirty and environmentally polluted environment with open sewage drains, dilapidated thatch houses, constant inflow of strangers from crisis prone areas, having to stay out without power, and sometimes the foul smell from open flowing sewage keeps them awake through the night. This is a clear narrative of the environment. The camel back was broken further when young ones kept losing friends due to defaulted sewages, diseases from polluted water sources as well as “old buildings, and cesspits tanks”, mothers and young women constant inhaling of smokes from most times not properly dry firewood. Rural farmers with massive farm lands having little or nothing from their farm proceeds due to exploitation by middle men and post-harvest loss. However, our (Smart plastic city initiative) to achieve an eco-friendly environment as well as empowerment of those living within the community through facilities, will provide a decent living condition and help in potential achievement

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

Odenin-gida Community in Nasarawa Toto Local Government Area of Nasawara State, is a community in the Northern part of Nigeria, about 99% of the households depends on small scale agriculture as a source of livelihood. The community is mainly involved in Melon, Maize, Guinea corn, Rice, Beans, Bene seed production as a source of livelihood. However they lack access to proper living conditions, no source of electrical energy and high deforestation is the only option for cooking energy. The issue of lack of market information, basic education, processing facilities and exploitation by middle men has kept the community in adept poverty. We want to change this narrative by ensuring that this community get basic facilities through the utilization of wastes. Examples includes the plastic city which will incorporate housing units, processing facilities, briquetting of rice husks, and beans chaff for biomass as cooking energy source which will be implemented by a partnering organization.

How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)

The idea, solution and goal for the adopted community is to create sustainable Eco-friendly plastic city, incorporating (housing unitswhich will meet the need of basic shelter), (a health facility which will ensure good health and wellbeing), (school Facility which will ensure basic education for the young ones), (clean cooking energy source which will reduce pollution as well as the provision of renewable energy for electricity generation), (recreation Facility), and (processing Facility whichwill increase the income of farmers, stop post-harvest loss, exploitation and make sure that farmers are empowered). These construction utilizes wastes which are transformed to non-load bearing elements of the Building and saves about 40% of actual building cost construction as compared to conventional buildings. The farmers will have access to facilities to improve their productivity and efficiency, displaced and migrated persons will have access to basic amenities to rebuild their lives.

What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)

 Educept. They will work with us solely for the establishment of the educational center (School Facility) to aid learning with the community.  Sholige Consult Limited, House Africa, and Rosmik Heritage Consult Limited. They will work closely with us for the construction of the plastic city.  AOA Integrated Technologies Ltd. Renewable energy installations with focus on solar energy. However we will push towards partnering with Rubitec Nigeria Ltd.  Medville Global Health Center. A Health Facility in which will work solely with us for the establishment of a Health Facility to aid good health and well-being as well as empowering local birth attendant.  Yaag Biomass Services.  Local groups for community involvement. Each partner will fund each facility intended to be used for their operation. Example, the Health facility to be ran by Medville Global Health Center will be funded by them, among others that will have a continuous operation within the plastic city.

The project name when put together simply means ‘’achieving safe shelters through environmentally friendly Touch‘’. The purpose of the organization is to ensure Building construction (Residential and Industrial) through the use of circular economy. The team consist of the Management Team (6 Professionals), Technical Team (10 professionals), artisans (8 Numbers of persons), laborers, Casual and contract base workmen to give the organization a robust balance. Our interest in displaced persons was spurred up by a member of our management team, she worked in areas and with victims of displacement due to insurgence, she had a bit of constrain and trauma due to constant rejection and no possibility of integration into host communities experienced by both herself and the people. She has however been particular about this issue and has spurred our interest into taking this area as a priority in our operations.

Hi Joseph Ante! Indeed an innovative idea, if you ask me. Nonetheless, i will like to learn more about its accessibility provisions for disabled persons. Put differently, how inclusive and disability friendly is this design for smart homes?

Photo of Joseph Ante

Hello Uchenna Okafor , thanks so much for your question.

Firstly, I will like to state clearly that disabled persons were put into consideration, and this is due to the fact that we know quite well that majority of the displacements in Nigeria are due to clashes, be it communal or religious etc. In which some of the survivors of these clashes that are now displaced are seriously rendered disabled after such clashes are over, apart from those that are disabled from birth or due to any challenge.
Therefore, the need is there to include them and any design that doesn't factor the disabled persons into its formation would be a great omission. We believe that if selected to move on with our project, the full design will be unveiled after the review process, in which the aspect to clearly show this area of concern you've raised will be clearly shown and our plan and the provision for those with disability in our design will be seen.

Secondly, on the issue of "accessibility provisions for disabled persons", we can send you a private message for you to view the designs we've done so far and the measures we've put in place to make sure that accessibility is priority as lack of accessibility will hamper the overall objective of our design as relating to those living with disability.

Thridly, as clearly stated in our design and operation, the smart homes is amongst our set of intended proposed idea for this challenge, but to answer your question on "how inclusive and disability friendly is this design for smart homes"
we believe that every good design is incomplete without the consideration of those with disability and also its future occupants and dwellers, and this led us to strategic thinking and presently we are still putting a finishing touch on our designs as the challenge is under review phase, we are ensuring that these designs ensure proper accessibility and adaptability to those disable persons that are presently displaced, and also the facilities will aid their productivity and increase their contribution towards the transformation of their environment and also the host community.

I believe I've been able to answer your question, and if there's any other, feel free to put it up. Thanks once again Uchenna Okafor.
