Enriching Lives Through Sustainable Toilet Solutions
Enriching lives of community on the move through awareness programs, sustainable sanitation system with clean water and proper hygiene.
What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)
Open spaces, riverbanks, road and street side and the open field are some of the common places to defecate. It is also seen that the water sources are badly affected by both pit/ring and modern flush toilets. The sewage from the flush toilet has badly affected the fragile environment. These practices not only pollute the environment but also contaminate the land and water resources and all these will eventually affect the health of BoPs.
As per survey, a person living in an open defecation or pit latrine area unknowingly consumes 10 grams of fecal content every day because of the water sources that are badly affected by those practices. This is causing 80% of diseases like Dysentery, Typhoid, Polio, Cholera, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis E, Gastroenteritis, Cysticercoids, Diarrhea, Ascariasis, Trachoma and others. One gram of human feces contains 10,000,000 Viruses, 1,000,000 Bacteria, 1,000 Parasite cysts, 100 Parasite eggs. That’s why people are not able to come out of the poverty cycle!
ECOLOO's award-winning biological sustainable Sanitation Solutions are based on the principle of Simplicity, Scalability, Environmental Responsibility & Economic Viability. It employs special formulated bacterial culture to treat and vanish human waste and transform the urine into a natural liquid fertilizer that is odor-free, pathogen-free and full of nutrients, perfect for organic farming.
ECOLOO provides sustainable sanitation solutions that are totally enclosed system (preventing pollution and contamination), waterless (preventing sewage generation and environmental contamination)
Hygienic toilets like ECOLOO lead to healthier people especially for women and children:
- Security issue: women & children get attacked by poisonous snakes & other dangerous insects and animals while defecating in the open
- Rape risk issue: women are facing a high risk of rape by men who are keen to keep eyes on them defecating in the open losing their dignities, pride & risking their lives
Geography of focus (500 characters)
Developing countries and countries that are in conflict and war, regions that suffer from natural disasters and communities where water is scared and groundwater pollution is high.
Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)
Sustainable sanitation is very important for people on the move in order to give them a dignified and healthy life similar to those who have such facilities and to create harmony, peace, well being & stability in many ways among them and neighbors by having minimum impact on land, water resources, environment and health facilities through the action of prevention which is better than cure.
What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)
Prevention is better than cure: We have to protect our water resources by preventing water from being flushed/mixed with waste. Flush toilet is the worst invention of all times according to WASH experts, creating diseases killing people.
World War III will be fought over water: In 2015, NASA’s satellite data revealed that 21 of the world’s 37 large aquifers are severely water-stressed: https://qz.com/691254/world-war-iii-will-be-fought-over-water
What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)
By having sustainable toilets and fertilizer, more lives on land can be saved from water-borne diseases, contaminated fish and chemical fertilizer (which can be hazardous to the soil, water and lives on land), and by treating our waste on-site instead of dumping the untreated sewage and toxics into oceans and rivers, we prevent the lives below water from being contaminated.
Our inclusive social business model promotes sustainable economic growth, developed to integrate underserved populations into the supply chain by creating business and job opportunities to the local community from production to distribution, installation, training, maintenance, collection and reuse of fertilizer from the toilet, which may lead to organic farming.
What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)
The ECOLOO development journey started with a TV documentary on Swedish TV showing the actual situation of the BoPs who suffer due to lack of adequate sanitation, how kids and women practice open defecation while other low-class women collect poo with no gloves nor shoes walking from house to house for just a few rupees. The life of those poor women was miserable and short. That was the motivation and the inspiration behind the creation and R&D of our toilet technology of which we are very passionate about.
Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)
The millions who live in conditions of poverty or BoPs, urban slums or refugee camps are the people we want to serve. We strongly believe that our sustainable solutions will solve all pressing WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) issues.
ECOLOO is not just about a sustainable toilet. It is about creating awareness in each user through the application of the technology from the toilet down to the fertilizer. A technology that can save money, water, energy and create better, healthier and greener environment for its citizens.
How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)
Our revenue model incorporating an inclusive social business where we engage local low-income social entrepreneurs especially women and single mothers to deliver our solution to local BoPs, people on the move and the underprivileged communities by giving them the opportunity to invest in our toilet through their own capital or microfinance, distribute, trainers, and they may rent the toilets to the public or areas where it is much needed as they maintain it, earn passive income from the liquid organic fertilizer generated in our system.
Menstruation and poor sanitation affect girls' school attendance. A live example, our project in Sierra Leone for a girls' school where no sanitation facility was in place and by installing ECOLOO the school attendance among girls improved a lot.
What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)
We work closely with NGOs and local partners in different countries and we wish to continue the collaboration with additional NGOs and local partners that share the same mindset and vision as ours.
