Circular Economy (Plastic Recycling)
Diverting 30 tonnes of end-consumer waste from Solid Waste Management Areas (SWMA) daily to make pavement blocks.
What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)
In Nigeria, of the millions of tons of plastic in the waste stream, only a small part, less than 2%, has been recycled. The rest is lies in landfills. It is either buried, burnt or ends up in the ocean. Studies have shown that these plastics emit methane and ethylene when exposed to solar radiation these contribute to global warming, plastics represent a heretofore unrecognized source of climate-relevant trace gases that are expected to increase as more plastic is produced and accumulated in the environment.
This end-consumer plastics, when collected, will be converted to flakes or viable products which would be sold to thermoform companies, households and construction sites respectively. Products include pavement blocks, tiles, buckets, basins, trays, etc. Over 800 homes have benefited directly from the exchange of redeemable points and cash for their plastic wastes, thus creating jobs at this level.

Of the 14 million plastic waste in the waste stream, less than 2% are recycled. Leaving the bulk of the none biodegradable waste to clog our drainages which latter washes off to the ocean. Destroying aquatic life.
Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)
This idea helps create a circular economy where nothing goes to waste thereby creating jobs at the same time protecting our environment from the adverse effect of its pollution.
What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)
We have identified five areas that our model helps in the overall achievement of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Goals 1 (End poverty), 6 (Availability and sustainable management of water and Sanitation), 8 (Sustain economic growth), 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns) and 17 (Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development) .
In the 4 years of De-Rabacons operations, 58 persons have benefitted directly - 8 full time staff, 18 casual, empowered 32 of our trainees by provision of start-up kits and capital with over 700 homes benefitting direct by exchange of redeemable points and cash for their plastic wastes, thus creating jobs at this level. Sponsorship of environmental sanitation clubs in secondary schools to imbibe the culture of recycling and teach the significance of it, sanitation exercises every last Saturday of the month in collaboration with the State’s ministry of Environment.
What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)
1. Fewer Solid Waste Management Areas (SWMA) due to efficient conversion rates.
2. Improved economy since its an incentive-based model.
3. A superior dynamic collection model using GIS
4.. Strength: Tight and reinforced parallel polymer
lattice. A globally accepted quality that’s lacking commercially.
5. Thickness: 0.8 – 1.2 mm thicker than the conventional household items, this giving it that firm feel and appeal.
6. Pavement block: This is a first in the industry. Interlocking blocks make with plastic pallets, that’s three times stronger and durable compared to that of the competition. Antifungal, fire resistant and non-slippery firmer grip.
7. Price Suitability: Lower pricing to appeal to our targeted customers and also penetrate deep into the market. Price margin from N20 to as higher as N80, this makes the product first of choice.
What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)
My love is Mother Earth, over the past seven years I have engaged in activities geared to saving her from man's neglect, this gives a proud feeling and a sense of satisfaction to contribute and remain a part of active campaigners championing this cause. In a world of wasteful usage and global warming, concerted efforts should be made to reduce wastages and help the ozone layer by recycling waste materials.
Recycling is the key to environmental conservation.
Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)
The community scores particularly low on recycling and local social relationship owing to the following barriers:
• The acceptability of disposal options for plastics varies widely
• Customs that encourages unhealthy habits
• The unmet demand for more information about what happens to the plastics
• Certain materials still cause confusion among households
• Not wanting to sort waste; not feeling personally rewarded for recycling.
Comparing the Community Dynamics data to other contextual datasets show similar on a range of socio-economic indicators, but differ greatly in terms of social relationships and perceptions of the need to recycle.
