Building Foundations: Suite of services
Suite of services that provide a pathway into healthy habits, finding stability, and counseling for the San Francisco homeless population.
What the idea could look like executed physically- it would provide a suite of services similar to a farmers market that connects multiple services ranging from free showers, mental health services, substance use disorder treatment, to health and fitness check ups for the SF homeless. Currently these services exist but are in different locations, at different times, and at different locations in the city.
The idea executed digitally would also present the same suite of services and ideally paired w/ the physical solution. This is a rough sketch of how we might be able to create individualized wellness plans for the SF homeless population. The suite of services could be presented digitally- allowing for the sf homeless population to prioritize their individual needs, be paired with a counselor to talk through specific challenges and goals.

What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)
People on the move impacted: SF homeless population. While there are many services that support the homeless in SF, there is not a centralized service implemented that allows for ease of use and access.
The problem we are solving, is that while there are an array of services to help the SF homeless population, there is no centralized service that looks at each individual and tailors a program to assist them with their specific needs and goals outside of food & shelter. "Farmers market" idea is key because some people may have trouble getting to places where they can get help (ie: accessibility to transit, home-bound, etc.). Someone who is homeless has to travel across multiple areas in one day to get the services they need. Our solution is trying to reduce the friction of them getting help. The approach that we take with this is looking at the holistic needs of the individual, and provides them a community to come back to- establishing trust between volunteers and provides them a support system. Another point of friction, the homeless would have to repeat their information across many different organizations, and there's an opportunity here to help them establish identity on a centralized platform- and share information across non-profits so that there's a holistic view of what services this individual have received, and how it ties into their larger goals, whether it's finding job stability, improving health, etc.
The solution we are suggesting is to create a centralized service that exists physically and/or digitally. The way it would work is to work with other non-profits in the area to offer services that become available via pop-up vans / service booths spanning across multiple locations in a week (ie: 'off-the grid' in SF / farmers markets, and how they serve multiple locations across different days). This would allow homeless to access the care that they need specifically- while getting exposure to new services.

In 2019, San Francisco reported 8,011 homeless people met the federal definition of homeless, an increase of 17 percent from 2017. When looking at San Francisco's expanded definition, the city's 2019 total homeless population is 9,784, the highest in the Bay Area.
This idea would first target San Francisco, CA, USA because of the urgent need to support this population in San Francisco, and the organization we are working with, Health Right 360, is based in this locale.
Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)
A shared future of stability and promise- thinking beyond basic needs (food, water, shelter), in our brainstorming session together, an insight was the people on the move have needs that need to be realized as well ranging from: 1) Job security & stability, 2) connection to family, 3) healthy habits and feeling healthy, 4) drug treatment plans.Providing resources to help people on the move to improve these areas can help shape a future of stability and promise that is unique to each individual.
What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)
The human need we're solving for is for the individual to feel connected with others, and know that there is someone out there who cares and thinks about them. One issue with homelessness is they fell into despair, and are lonely with no one (friends or families) to rely on. This idea, is giving them the suite of services to customize and to realize a plan to achieve their own personal goals.
We're going beyond meeting basic needs - but also recognizing that each individual, regardless of their situation - deserves to live a life of dignity, joy, and hope.
What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)
As a result of implementing our idea, it would allow more accessibility to a centralized service to those who are homeless in SF. It would provide the tools and resources to allow for autonomy, and provide more accessibility for those who are homeless to achieve their goals beyond basics like food and shelter - to fighting addictions and getting mental health support. The "farmers market" idea is key because some people may have trouble getting to places where they can get help, our proposed solution is trying to reduce the friction for the homeless to find and receive help.
What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)
The inspiration behind this idea is one that is centered upon services - similar to a farmers market, or a health fitness app, a person can go to this centralized service offering and select what they need- whether it's promoting healthy habits, learning interpersonal techniques to feel closer to family members, getting mental health help, or drug treatment plans, it gives the person dignity and choice to shape a future they can choose for themselves.
Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)
The community we'd like to serve would be San Francisco's homeless population. SF homeless population rose 30% since 2017, and while there are an array of services available for this group, none are presented as a centralized service. Making it a centralized service would allow for more accessibility, and allowing them to create and customize a wellness program that is individualized and allows them to prioritize their own needs. It also raises awareness of what other services are available, and quickly connecting them to services and other organizations faster.
How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)
HealthRIGHT 360 does not wait for people in need to walk though our doors seeking help. In 2018 they launched a street outreach team to connect with people living outside in encampments, Navigation Centers, and in other unsafe or unstable circumstances and are in the process if launching Mobile Medical Services to a bring health clinic directly to people who are hesitant or unable to make their way to brick-and-mortar facilities.
A fully-outfitted van two complete exam rooms, a waiting area, a bathroom, refrigerator, and an elevator wheelchair lift, HealthRIGHT 360’s Mobile Medical Services are able to drive directly to where the need is. With this flexibility comes the ability to band together with other services addressing the many other needs of people experiencing homelessness. Working with elected officials and community leaders we are poised to open pop-up multi-service centers with community partners for services addressing: food security; transportation and mobility.

HealthRIGHT 360 has deep roots in San Francisco, with its first programs founded in in the 1960s to serve the thousands of adolescents and young adults who were streaming into San Francisco for the cultural revolution. Always guided the principle that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, HealthRIGHT 360’s programs have grown over the decades to serve over 10,000 San Franciscans – and a total of 30,000 Californians – annually.
HealthRIGHT 360 is constantly innovating in order to respond to the ever-changing needs of people relying on San Francisco’s safety-net services. In 2017 the organization opened a 50,000 square foot service hub where people experiencing homelessness can access welcoming, non-judgmental medical, dental, and mental health care, and be connected to detox and treatment for addiction.
