Maximizing social value of single mother refugees by equipping them with independent ability to sustain their needs at the camps.
What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)
Separation of families impacts majority of refugees in Western Tanzania, during movement and after the arrival at camps. In most cases women are found with children while their husbands are nowhere to be found. Men run away from their families leaving the burden of duties and responsibilities to their wives .i.e. children caring, domestic cores and economic activities for family survival.
The root causes being;
Beliefs and traditional roles from their home countries i.e. in DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, women struggle for family livelihood and survival i.e. gathering firewood, trading, nursing babies etc., while men are nowhere to be found. The case is more worse for these women at camps, since they are now required to perform all these duties at new limited environment and in the absence of their partners.
Also, death of their partners and unawareness on benefits of both partners dwelling together especially during maternal days ,as most women are seen at farms and in trading areas with 8-9 months pregnancy or 1-2 months babies on their backs.
Limited economic freedom to sustain family requirements with pressure from their fellow relatives who legally resides in Tanzania as they meet in their common markets at
Responding to the challenge ;Psycho social support is needed to these women i.e. providing them special livelihood cash grants(no husband grants) to boost their income and compensating their partners labor force, guiding and counseling them to accept and cope with the situation of living with no partner.
Also, education provision through seminars and broadcasting radio programs to refugees on risks women encounters for performing over duties, in absence of their partner especially during maternal days,by referring successfully partners stories who does their duties together with policies that favors these women i.e. "LET EVERY WOMAN SHINE AT HOME & TO THE HOST COUNTRY, will prosper their ability to excel.
Geography of focus (500 characters)
Over years, Tanzania has hosted refugees from Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo. in western regions (kigoma,Kagera,Tabora,Katavi), and Kigoma region having a long history of hosting refugees at Nyarugusu,Nduta and Mtendeli camps.
Despite lack of new arrivals from Burundi, population grows with up to 1000 babies born each month across camps, and possibly new influx could spill at Kigoma camps before the election in Democratic of Congo. Majority being independent women and their children.
Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)
The idea increases social value to impacted women with separations of families to those with stable families.Provided with livelihood cash grants and counselling to mental and psychological stress, will improve their economic and social welbeing and cut the socio -economic gap between them and other women with stable families in the camps. On contrary conflicts and income inequalities will be maintained.Hence peace, joy and hope of all community members at the camp.
What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)
The idea cut across the needs of both men, women and children at the camp. It solves the need for peace ,joy and hope for a better living of a single mother refugee, in present and future times.By considering the need for every woman to enjoy maternal days and experience the love, courage and support from their husband in performing all family duties and responsibilities on their behalf.
It also, secure peace and reduces conflicts costs among community members, through boosting the no partners women with cash livelihood grants, which will rise their family income and reduce socio-economic disparities between families.
More than that, the idea meets the children needs of love and proper parental care i.e monitoring, guiding and maintaining children behavior by both parents at the camp, through motivation and education on risks and benefits of both partners not involve/ involve in growth and development of children. Before, during and after delivery.
What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)
After implementing the idea, the single mother at the camp will be capable and proud to handle family duties and responsibilities alone without compromising their husbands decision of dumping them with the children. They will live happier life of peace at their homes without conflicting with their neighbors, since they will be capable to cover the family requirements independently and maintain the socio-economic gap between them and neighbors with stable families.
Also these women will accept their situation and develop peace of mind from psychological stress they encountered after losing their husbands through guidance and counselling sessions at camps. This will foster proper growth and development of babies during pregnancy and after delivery. The results will be measured by tracking the growth of women per capital income within camps, their participation in economic activities, the decrease rate of maternal death and malnutrition to children.
What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)
I have spirit and passion to solve the problem, since i am also a single mother, impacted by separation of family.
Over years(from maternity to current) i have been dumped by my partner.Despite having freedom to aces social and economic gains,It was hard to accept the reality i.e that he has gone, my status is changed to a single mother, and i should stress my personal capabilities in meeting family requirements.I experienced lots of hardship in managing all the duties and responsibilities alone, till when i received social and economic assistance from my relatives. The experience and sufferings i had,is just half to that of a single mother refugee, since they are experiencing the same situation but with limited social and economic environment.
Also the experience shared from fellow organisation member, who had work with international organisations at the camps,on the challenges these women faces and their needy for changes, inspired me to strive for changes.
