What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

There are 5000 internally displaced and returnees living in Gbudue State since the signing of Peace deal in 2018. These IDPs and returnees have the desire to grow crops to feed themselves but do not have agricultural tools and seeds. Community skills Development wants to support 1500 IDPs and returnees with agricultural tools, seeds and extension services in Yambio County. In Yambio County alone, there are many cases of robbery recorded and dealt with by the police. Prostitution is a means of livelihood majorly amongst young IDPs, returnees-girls and women and is on the increase. The host communities in Yambio and Gbudue State have conflict with IDPs and returnees over the scarce resources available e.g. on harvesting Palm fruits for oil, mangoes and oranges, fishing ground, wild honey harvesting etc. and some of these problems could be resolved by engaging the IDPs and returnees in crop production.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

This project targets the internally displaced persons and returnees settled in Yambio County, Gbudue State, South Sudan and their host communities

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

Peace is the bridge between the internally displace, returnees and host communities. There are cases of struggle over scarce resources and the rate of crime in Yambio is now on the rise.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

PROJECT GOAL is for Food Security; To enhance Crops production and Food Security by vulnerable IDPS, Returnees and Host Communities who are farmers in Gbudue State PROJECT OBJECTIVES OR PROJECT OUTCOMES a. To offer extension trainings in Farming to IDPS & Returnees (both Women and men). b. To provide IDPs & Returnees with tools and seeds needed for crops production.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

There will be availability of food stuff in the homes of IDPS and returnees. They will be engaged in fields instead of being idle. There will be reduction in the number of cases/conflicts over palm tree fruits for oil, mangoes, reduced cases of theft, prostitution as means of livelihood

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

The land in Yambio County is very fertile. The government of South Sudan still lacks the capacity to employ and pay the civil servants and yet not even a small section of the Internally displaced persons have professions or skills to be employed

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

The community is of farmers. The project intends to equip 1,500 identified beneficiaries of IDPS, returnees and host communities. The majority being vulnerable women who are mostly; widows, single mothers’, disable persons, 25% of men aged bellow 40 Years of age to directly benefit from the project. The project targets four (4) communities of Saura, Duduma, Bazungua and Ikpiro in Yambio County. The categories of the beneficiaries are IDPS, Returnees and small number of the Host community who were also on run but did not leave the areas for one Month. All need supports and to benefit from this project. The 1500 households will be taken through extension services for crop production, Vegetable farming and other farming skills such as season and farm planning, cropping, harvesting and post-harvesting, drying and storage of crops. Farming tools and seeds will be distributed to the house-holds depending on the size of the family members.

How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)

Some earlier farming projects were of success and we think that this particular project can be of some success as well. It is better to offer a hook than a fish. The Internally displaced and returnees are here over 6 months already and have settled. It would be better to offer them sustaining projects than emergence

What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)

Community Skills Development works in partnership with the State Ministry of Agriculture as a regulatory body. Community Skills Development participates in the monthly Food security Cluster meeting that is joined by WFP and FAO and this is facilitated by the State Ministry of Agriculture. WFP provides emergence food to IDPs and returnees and FAO offers some seeds, tools and trainings to host communities and some IDPs. The State Ministry of Agriculture harmonizes the activities of partners to avoid duplication and ensure balanced service delivery.
