Feel any place like home
What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)
Locabas is an application that makes easy the communication with the ones who are or were nearby and this could bring many benefits to everyone.
Although it has not been developed especially for displaced persons (in the video there is no reference to these people, still it shows functions that absolutely benefit them), it can ideally be used by them.
In the case of displaced people or/and refugees, how can one of them ask all nearby ones in a camp (or in a train in the move or in a ship, a new neighborhood etc.) “I need an aspirin, does someone has one?” With Locabas it’s only a matter of a post, the person posts it and share it with every user in a distance of up to 500 meters (1,640 ft).
In the same way, she can ask from someone to share a taxi with her or set an offer for something she want to sell or share some useful info with the local community.
Moreover, through the app’s messenger, she can text anyone who is nearby at the moment, she see them on her screen, or to anyone who was nearby at some time, she can find them in her “history”.
Locabas will be useful in thousands of cases and a person will be able to create precious relationships.
Additionally, it helps everyone to feel more safe wherever they are. By tapping the SOS button, a message will be automatically sent to users they have selected and to users who are close to them at the moment.
Geography of focus (500 characters)
As a social app, like Facebook, is geographical neutral. Since it has to be applied somewhere, we would choose a refugees' camp in Moria, a site of Lesvos which is an island in Greece. It has more than 6,000 refugees, mostly from Syria.
Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)
It's easy to convince displaced people to use the app, they have more need for nearby help. At least they can support each other. The permanent residents of the new neighborhood will be very skeptical, if not negative, about the refugees. Still, they can choose to use the app to see who are the new neighbors (they can be invisible, it's a feature of the app, so they can see without been seen). With the time, many interactions can happen, and trust can be built.
What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)
Communication is the precondition of any human cooperation. By handling it prudently, someone can fulfill any need.
“Why do bees hum? They don't remember the text!” can be a post. And a party can start. “You make my day, wanna come here to treat you a beer?” can be a personal message.
“Hi there, I was in your position 10 years before. Now everything is good. Don’t give up”. It’s a post from a nearby ex-refugee.
“Would you like to clean your car for $3? That was my job in my country, I will give you the best result”. A refugee seeks his first job.
What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)
Let’s suppose that we will implement the idea in a refugee camp, in a Greek island (the app is ready, we need to simplify it for it has features not necessary for a first run and to translate it to refugees’ language – now it’s Greek and English).
Suppose that anyone in the camp become users, that the public servants become users too, and members of NGO too.
Refugees can exchange information easily in one to one mode or in one to many mode. Moreover, they can find all the public servants and NGO members that have come or visited the camp in the “history”. So, they can ask for their help even when they are not present.
Having those, they can build efficient cooperation and benefit at the maximum degree. It would be easier to find between them people with the same interests. They can borrow things easier, give away things (a book, a magazine) arrange common activities etc. And all these transparently. Because if you post something (or send a message to someone), you reveal your id.
What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)
Nowadays, It takes years to learn people even in the block of flats you stay. By facilitating the rapid development of communication with the nearby people, we can benefit incredibly. It is something that modern societies refuse, but the displaced people can easily adopt because of their need. In the end, they can bring it to the rest (even if the opposite should be the normal).
Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)
In response to that demand, we dispose a part of a newspaper article (actually, we do not have the time to write something better for we discovered the challenge just a day before its deadline of August 17.
" Oxfam condemns EU over 'inhumane' Lesbos refugee camp
Violence so bad that women wear nappies at night to avoid leaving tents, report says.
The EU has been strongly criticised over conditions in Greece’s largest refugee camp, where Oxfam reported women are wearing nappies at night for fear of leaving their tents to go to the toilet.
The British-based NGO described the increasingly dangerous state of the EU-sponsored Moria camp on the island of Lesbos, where a 24-year-old man from Cameroon was found dead in the early hours of Tuesday as temperatures fell below freezing.
Under a landmark deal agreed between the EU and Turkey in March 2016 to reduce the number of people..."
How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)
The assets of the people in Moria are what they have managed to carry with them from their homes (they come there by boats from Turkey), their education, the tents and some appliances given to them by the aid organization. They do not work on a project that we run for them. Our idea is to show them the app and to how they can use it to cooperate with each other, the camp employees, the people of the nearby village and all those who pass from this place and has gone to other places or countries.
What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)
Reasonably the authorities of Lesbos island would like to work alongside us because they have too many unsolved problems with the refugees that come there and not a plan to communicate with them effectively.
What part of the displacement journey is your solution addressing
Being on the move, crossing borders, and/or temporarily settled

Pilot: We have started to implement the idea as a whole with a first set of real users. The feasibility of an innovation is tested in a small-scale and real world application (i.e. 3-15% of the target population)

Tell us more about your group or organization [or lived experience as a displaced person?] (1000 characters)
Our mission is to create marketing solutions through information technologies. From a point of view, displaced people have to learn to market themselves in new environments. We have created a communication platform that can connect them with nearby people in any point of space and time. What we can do, if you choose as to apply this platform to displaced people, is to learn them exactly that, how to market themselves. They should not face the problems passively, they have to find the ways to cooperate under any circumstances. And we would like to show to them how. What they know and what they can do well? What is the "product" they can sell? To whom they can sell? How to promote? At what price. It's not about money. It's about value creation and exchange. They have to be smart. They are smart. They just need an opportunity to exploit this. And that communication platform can give this opportunity.
