What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

When women leave their home of origin heading to a new country they hold many fears with them, fears of not being welcomed in the new country, not finding friends with the same interests, not finding people to help them; in general fears of not fitting in. My proposed platform will help them by building a community to connect with each other and to provide the necessary support they need. The platform is a website where women can share their stories and experience to get in touch with each other or with organizations that might help them. Through the website, people can also get in touch with the storyteller to know more about her or to ask/offer help. And I wish for more, not only a website but to have a place where women can meet and talk about their lives to share their fears and their hopes to help each other to overcome the fears and to achieve their goals by the help of organisations or natives that will give them the required support and training they need.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

The proposed project is mainly targeting the newcomer, immigrant and refugee women in Berlin,Germany.

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

My aim is to build bridge between the women newcomers in Berlin and the German community. And between the newcomers with different backgrounds to help and support each other.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

Worldwide, women are leaving their home of origin searching for new, better lives, and career challenges. And from day one they feel that they need help, they need people to take their hands to the right path or to the right organization that might help them, and they need to make friends in the new country. The interactive platform will give space for every woman to express herself and her needs, will give her the chance to share her story to inspire, help, get helped and also to build relationships by getting in touch with other women.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

Building a community where newcomers women feel comfortable, respected ,and inspired. To have the support or to give support to others to make it easier for them to settle themselves in the new community. To meet people with the same interests to share talks, ideas and even problems will help newcomers to feel belonging. And the result of this community is effective and proactive women who believe in their capabilities and are able to integrate in the country.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

I moved to Berlin January,2017 and it was really hard for me at the beginning to settle my life, to find friends and to get to know the culture. In January,2019 I took UX/UI course at a non profit school called ReDI school and part of the course was to design a storytelling website for women newcomers in Berlin and it was open for every student to design a website based on his/her own view, findings and ideas. and I worked so hard in the design, conducted interviews with newcomers to be able to design a good website to help people find their desires. I pitched the idea of the website in the demo day and many people showed interest in the idea and many people like me were searching for inspirations and for hope in the new country. That’s why I am working now to make the project live and to implement my design to give the newcomers a space to share their stories, ask for help and get in touch with others to build connections and to adapt in the new community.

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

From the interviews that were conducted with the newcomers there were some findings, and the most common finding was that the newcomers wants to find people with the same interests to build relationships and to share experiences with each other, through the platform we can help them doing so by providing search and filter options on the platform to find the specific people they want to get in touch with. And also there are many other options like they can find organizations that might help them or to know the recent news about Berlin.

How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)

-Emphasize the role of migrant and refugee women in integration and strengthening their social role. -Give the women the required support based on their needs and qualifications, make them feel belonging to the community, and these are a prerequisite for successful integration.

What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)

I am searching for frontend and backend engineers to implement the website design and to make it live and available for people to check, and also marketing team to help in making the idea spread quickly to have more stories to share and also to get offers from organisations that are willing to help women.

We found that doing a service project together in a small group helped to give a common experience while getting to know one another. A shared task, especially if not a complicated one, helped to take focus off of being new. I think your idea of bringing newcomers together could bring benefit in many ways. Keep offering your encouragement and support.

Shohanda Mohammed , thanks for this idea. Women definitely need support of other women especially those who have has similar experiences. This connection and mentoring can help several women experiencing trauma help. your project shares a lot of similarities with The Village Institute

Hi Shohanda Mohammed, thanks for the great move on women supporting, since the magnitude of the problem is huge and the area of interest is only Bernin Germany, is there any interest of extending the project and make it global move?

Dear Shohanda,

The idea of a supportive network is amazing, especially for women. Would like to share that we are also working on a similar activity and focused on addressing the issue of human trafficking which is a form of modern slavery. Trafficking is an aspect that isnt being discussed when we are talking about migrants. It would be great to explore opportunities to collaborate and deploy our technology that can contribute towards addressing the underlying issue of human trafficking. Look forward to explore opportunities to collaborate.

Hi Shohanda, I like your idea of a supportive network; that's similar to our idea Basefugees: a community platform for people on the move & tech4refugees resources  ;)
Yet, I see one issue which you don't address in your application (and one issue that we are faced with too with our platform!): How will you protect the women sharing their story from online xenophobia and harassment? I am sure you have been thinking about it and I would love to hear how you have been thinking about tackling this!

Many thanks,
