What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

The security and humanitarian contexts in the Democratic Republic of Congo are marked by the growing activism of armed groups, conflicts between communities and FARDC military operations against armed groups. Regular clashes between different local militias and between the latter and the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) cause constant mass movements of people, accompanied by serious violations of human rights, including the right to physical integrity, gender-based violence. access to health care, education, employment, access to land, adequate shelter and documentation. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the DRC, the DRC hosted 3.7 million internally displaced people in 10 provinces in 2018. Most of the internally displaced persons are women and girls (52%). This situation is exacerbated by the fact that displacement is cyclical and weakens both displaced families and the communities that receive them. Internally displaced persons are often marginalized, their access to education and work is very low and their participation in the decision-making process is low. Thus, the Kadiwaku Family Foundation's interventions will target the internally displaced persons and the local communities that welcome them and the returned persons. Particular emphasis will be placed on the following interventions: The implementation of income-generating activities and the implementation of peaceful coexistence and community awareness activities.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

The project will be implemented in the province of Ituri. Ituri is one of the 26 provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its capital is the city of Bunia. The province has 725,000 internally displaced persons, including 350000 in 2018 following a resurgence of violence between the Hema and Lendu communities in the Djugu territory. Following a lull in 2018, the situation deteriorated further in 2019 with a series of attacks by unidentified armed groups and new displacements.

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

KFF will work jointly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the DRC, the National Commission for Refugees and the National Protection Cluster to better address protection gaps, support and empower the people with specific needs and refine the advocacy initiatives with the authorities to prevent further displacement, particularly in areas related to community conflict and the resolution of land and shelter problems.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

strengthening the reintegration of internally displaced persons with particular attention to those with special needs, including persons with disabilities, women, and children, through transitional shelter interventions and cash-based interventions and income-generating activities. In addition, the intervention will focus on the prevention and protection of cases of gender-based sexual violence through referrals, community participation as well as advocacy efforts to reduce the risk of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as a better quality of intervention, promoting peaceful coexistence with local communities. This will require timely, robust and reliable data through protection monitoring, identification, documentation, tracking of displacement as well as profiling of displaced people focused on durable solutions.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

As results of our interventions, (1) the communities, displaced persons and local authorities will be involved in formulating protection needs and responses, prevention, and solutions; (2) the communication, dialogue, and information sharing are strengthened with greater visibility of available services and mechanisms for referencing, feedback and complaints; and (3) the resilience of communities is strengthened through entrepreneurial initiatives. Also, KFF will continue to advocate for a sustainable solutions approach. Throughout the displacement cycle, internally displaced persons will receive appropriate information to make their decision. KFF will encourage a voluntary return to safe areas of origin and integration into host communities.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

Similar solutions to this problem exist. However, women, refugees, displaced persons with disabilities face a range of barriers to access them. KFF will focus the intervention not only by providing the same solutions, but also helping them to overcome the barriers that prevent from accessing these services. Finally, we provide them with assistive devices, and we combine our training with sign language to increase program inclusivity.

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

The project aimed at promoting the sustainability of its activities beyond its life cycle through the selection of champion implementing partners. The training of the 52 staff members by qualified DPOs and NGOs will ensure sustainability as it provides stakeholders with human capital. Several community-based organizations expressed their intentions to carry on the implementation of project activities beyond the project life cycle. They have indicated they will raise the funds necessary for implementation, and several associations have indicated their commitment to continuing to work with disadvantaged youth by creating an initiative to work together in that direction.

How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)

- Local experience and presence in the project implementation environment; - engagement with refugees and displaced persons; - the trust of local communities and opportunities for partnerships with other organizations working in the same field; - other factors that would facilitate access and a better understanding of people in care (eg complaint handling mechanism, etc.) and which would reduce administrative difficulties;

What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)

1) Finca: Kadiwaku Family Foundation works alongside FINCA, a leader in microfinancing, to educate disabled entrepreneurs on how to manage and save money. We assist local entrepreneurs in collecting the required documents and provide recommendation letters for loan application. For the past 16 years, FINCA has provided financial products to low-income communities to support self-employment. This includes loans, saving plans, insurance, money transfer. KFF will strengthen this partnership with a particular focus on providing girls and women with disabilities with financial education and loans; 2) Free Wheelchair Mission: Wheelchairs from FWM will improve mobility for refugees and displaced persons with disabilities and help increase their participation in KFF’s proposed activities; 3) Echoing Green: KFF is receiving strategic support alongside financial award to improve the entrepreneurial capabilities of underprivileged youth, especially persons with disabilities.

Kadiwaku Family Foundation is dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities and their families achieve economic self-sufficiency. The organization is also involved in advocating for the human rights of people with disabilities. With financial support from the United States African Development Foundation, KFF is currently implementing a program called ‘’ Inclusive entrepreneurship for people with disabilities in DR Congo’’ that aims at improving entrepreneurial capabilities of young Congolese with disabilities through training, networking and business support (www.kadiwaku.org). KFF will adopt a locally based approach that involves bringing together local civil society organizations (DPOs, NGOs and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and local government officials to position KFF, not as a competitor to other NGOs or initiatives but rather establish a lasting partnership to sustain and extend the program.
