What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

Cameroon has one of the youngest age structures in the world. Over three-quarters of the population is under the age of 35 and about half are under the age of 15. Unemployment for 18-24 year olds is 80%. Combined with challenges of rebuilding a society impacted by over 3 years of the Anglophone Crisis and over 8 years since the Boko Haram insurgence started , young people in northern part of Cameroon and the two English speaking regions of Cameroon must be innovative in their approach to development. Navigating this conflict phase requires fine-tuned problem solving skills, creative thinking, perseverance, and hope in a thriving future. Education,sports and play is the key to building a sustainable future for any community, state, or region. The education sector has negatively been affected and schooling has continuously been interrupted the ongoing socio political crisis in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. School children were killed, abducted, displaced leading to a high level of trauma. Many of the School facilities have been burnt down. Large numbers of the population in the affected regions have been displaced leading to thousands of children being out of school. This has adversely affected the gains in education achieved prior to the crisis in 2016. Sports and play creates impact on the development on a physical, social and mental level. Our main objectives is to - Fight Youth Radicalization and Recruitment by violent extremist groups - Fight Lack of skills and effective programmes for rehabilitation and reintegration - Build a network of young peace builders as the rise of Violent Extremism is a major problem in Cameroon. To help young people build trusting relationships through active team building experience.-To assist this youth have fun with their peers.-To help them reclaim courage and self-belief through exhilarating experience.-To engage their past and current circumstances while building hope for the future.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

The idea targets communities around the North West,South West and Northern Regions of Cameroon i.e. the West, Litoral and Adamawa Regions. We target these communities because they are heavily hit by Boko Haram in case of the North and by the rise in fighting between the military and armed separatist groups. The rise in the recruitment of young fighters, rise in GBV,prostitution, drug abuse and many other social ills in these communities is alarming.The more reason for them being our target.

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

Our idea takes a holistic approach in both conflict and host communities of IDPs to instill the concept of peace in the minds of young people between the ages of 5 and 20. We run programs that get IDP young people actively engaged with their peers in host communities so as to bridge the gap between them through several activities and in a situation of communities in conflict we set up safe spaces where these kids can play and learn.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

Humanity needs more than just food,cloth and shelter.Our communities need more.Interviewing a former separatist recruit, he said "I want my life as a kid youth back,I want to go back to school". Our approach offers young people the opportunity to study through our Emergency Education Program (EEP) in Cameroon. It targets students who could not get registered into formal primary and secondary schools or had to discontinue schooling because of cost and the social unrest. The EEP was piloted on a two sided approach, to address immediate constrains to school attendance. On the demand side, we provided food, scholastic materials, clothing, and health care etc. to pupils who attended. On the supply side, we supported school setting and expansion through the setting up of makeshift class rooms and making tutors available and also offer high and counselling and sports programs–all of which work as psychosocial interventions that support emotional healing and mitigate the impact of war.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

Our focus communities hosting IDPs from the two English speaking regions are predominantly French speaking and also farming communities.I approach is to introduce local kids into an English language training program together with IDP kids so they in turn learn the language and become bilingual while the IDP kids also learn the French Language. Higher disadvantage kids and youth in host communities would also be opportune to participate in the program and study as well. Recreation,youth development and capacity building activities would involve youth of the entire community. For youth who would engage in vocational training and entrepreneurship development,the opportunity would be giving to both IDP and other youths of the community. We greatly believe our programs would bring radical change in host communities in the behavior of young people,their approach toward leaving together, their view of peace and national unity and the use of dialogue and violence in any peace process.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

Love for my community and the values we young people at CAPAD hold dearly is our driving force.Our implementation of the pilot phase of Support to IDP Education and through Emergency Education Program (EEP) in South West Region of Cameroon and Colors of Peace (JOY &LAUGHTER) The overall objectives of CAPAD pilot phase where met and the results imply potential follow-on or repeater is of great need. It keeps us moving to believe we can put joy and smiles on the faces of these young people.

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

The target communities are predominantly farming communities, many leaving on less than $3 a day.These communities as well have a rise in youth unemployment, drug abuse,gender based violence, theft and many other social ill.Illiteracy is rising with children not going to school partly because of peer pressure and because parents can afford. The rise in IDPs and the influx in these communities only implies things would go worst.The people are willing and ready to support their internally displaced brothers and sisters but lack the capacity to support the influx.

How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)

Our idea take a more interactive and inclusive approach to get all members of the community involve actively at all levels. The programs are structured to have long lasting impact on community growth since we aim to get the community on board by empowering them along side IDPs as only community members have the power to make IDP integration, easy,smooth and lovely.

What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)

As of now we are working with a higher institution of learning ACCESS Higher Institute of Professional Studies and the Healthy Child Foundation.

Community Action for Poverty Alleviation and Development is a youth led community driven non-governmental organization, positioned to provide humanitarian assistance and aid, promote the full development of the social and civil rights of the most vulnerable and unprotected sectors of the population in our country. Its projects span across various fields including education, health, water and sanitation, child care, human rights, environment, youth and women’s empowerment, youth and peacebuilding as well as providing assistance to discriminated and disadvantaged community groups such as people with disabilities, street children and orphans, and it operates using the resources of the Organization’s members and of cooperating individuals and organizations, for the purpose of providing such assistance and aid from the perspective of an NGO at a level distinct from the assistance provided by governments and business corporations.
