What problem does the idea help to solve and how does your solution work? (2,000 characters maximum)

The people who are targeted by the "Andante" project are those who emigrate from countries in Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador) to the United States and who, during their time in Mexico, settle temporarily in different states and localities. This process causes xenophobic manifestations and violate Human Rights of migrants, a community in transit that is subjected to discrimination and social rejection. The problem to be solved is the negative narrative about migration, and the xenophobic and discriminatory practices against migrants, caused by violent communication, disconnection, ignorance and distrust among the inhabitants of a community. People who do not know the reasons for forced international migration, such as the economic crisis and violence experienced by migrants in their countries of origin, tend to think that migrants are a foreign threat or as undesirable invaders. This thinking is reinforced by an unfounded fear of assuming that they are potentially dangerous with the intention of causing damage to the country. The idea within the Andante project is to create a sensitization process that involves people living in the communities where there is migratory flow so that they identify the migratory phenomenon as an element that adds and enriches. It takes as reference the historical processes of Mexico as a place open to migration and a country made up of migrants, as well as the identification of points of identity and coincidence between the local community and the migrant community that lead to conflict resolution and change towards positive narratives.

Geography of focus (500 characters)

Initially, municipalities in the states of Puebla, Veracruz and Chiapas have been proposed. Particularly, the Tapachula (Chiapas) Migratory Station XXI and Acayucan (Veracruz) where Colectivo Tomate will shortly start to work. However, it is possible to work in all towns and cities of México, where migrant communities cross through, that are part of the migrant route to the USA like walking circuits of the southeast and northwest identified by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture

Building Bridges: What bridge does your idea build between people on the move and neighbors towards a shared future of stability and promise? (500 characters)

The "Andante" proposal includes participatory artistic, psychological and human rights tools for groups of migrants, as well as facilitators and local volunteers responsible for community centers for migrant support. It is a sensitization process that integrates the local community and the migrant community through participatory theater sessions, playful workshops and self-expression, spaces for dialogue between neighbors, and participatory painting of murals.

What human need is your idea solving for? (1,000 characters)

The project includes the implementation of a community diagnosis executed by Colectivo Tomate that will identify the main needs of the community in order to define spaces and activities. Andante includes a social and an artistic component, with workshops and group activities that allow coexistence and interaction between local communities and migrant communities, spaces for dialogue and exchange of stories for literary and pictorial expression, collective painting of murals that tell stories of people, cooperative games, participatory theater sessions generated from community stories and outdoor cinema functions. This allows the migrant community to participate in spaces where their voice is heard. It also allows them to feel part of a community in which it is possible to participate and contribute, as well as connect with other people in recreational activities to express their thoughts, feelings and identity elements.

What will be different within the community of focus as a result of implementing your idea? (1,000 characters)

The objective of working with the local community, the migrant community, civil society organizations and members of the public sector related to the attention of migrants is to facilitate participatory dialogue processes, conflict resolution methods and peace theories. Therefore, some of the outcomes indicators are: the number of formal actors that get involved with the project and with the community; the number of actions generated during the duration of the project; as well as the training of people, volunteers and institutional leaders in participatory artistic tools to know how to listen and disseminate stories of the migrant community, useful for decision making and the generation of proposals that give continuity to the project with other migrant groups in the future.Likewise, it seeks to design instruments that can be adapted to each community for the collection of information that allows measuring the results and impacts of the intervention in the participating community.

What is the inspiration behind your idea? (1,000 characters)

Behind this project is the Colectivo Tomate's 10 years of experience working in Mexico. A fundamental aspect of this work has been the collective creation and integration of the communities, achieved through dialogue, workshops and the painting of murals that tell the stories of people. This idea is important because it allows a discriminated and violent minority, such as the migrant community, who lives in a locality from which it is not native, to have the opportunity to live, interact and participate in exchange spaces with the local community for peaceful conflict resolution and non-violent communication. For the construction and continuity of these exchange spaces, the importance of the participation of local actors such as civil society organizations, governments and public institutions that contribute and join efforts in this process has been identified.

Describe the dynamics of the community in which the idea is to be implemented. (1,000 characters)

Some places in Mexico have been configured as “waiting territories” where heterogeneous flows of migrants are temporarily established due to the impossibility of continuing to advance along the migration route to the United States. To address this phenomenon, shelters and public spaces have been enabled as places temporarily occupied by migrants. In transit through these locations, migrants rest, establish social networks and seek to meet their basic needs. However, due to the strengthening of security on the northern border, these towns have become permanent territories, where migrants stay longer than expected, seeking their settlement and the possibility of permanence and, therefore, work and sources of income. This is perceived by locals as something negative, generating acts of discrimination and exclusion, based on stereotypes, prejudices and stigmas reflected in lower payments for the same work, arbitrary detentions and negative narratives (on which they are "too many""thieves")

How does your idea leverage and empower community strengths and assets to help create an environment for success? (1,000 characters)

CT is only a process facilitator so that the local community is the protagonist of its own transformation through activities in which its involvement is essential: •Social mapping: Production of social maps that identify the construction of knowledge from participation and social commitment. •Accompaniment and emotional attention: Group and personal sessions to share containment and listening tools among migrants who complement the formation of the work teams of local organizations. •Application of security and human rights protocols: It seeks to complement the training of the work teams of local organizations on non-violent communication, “elicitive” methods (relational energy of the parties in the conflict) and transnational understandings (holistic combination of values) for incorporation into their working methods. These practices will be oriented towards the protection of the human rights of the migrant community. •Mapping of migrant routes: Use of social mapping techniques.

What other partners or stakeholders will work alongside you in implementing the idea, if any? (1,000 characters)

The different interventions carried out by Colectivo Tomate include the generation of strategic alliances with local actors such as: companies, civil society organization, local governments, universities and public institutions. In particular, for the implementation of “Andante” the participation and involvement of civil society organizations and members of the public sector related to the care of migrants and the health sector are sought to exchange experiences and define joint strategies for the attention of aspects such as emotional health, human rights and non-violent communication.

What part of the displacement journey is your solution addressing

  • Being on the move, crossing borders, and/or temporarily settled

Tell us how you'd describe the type of innovation you are proposing

  • Service: A new or enhanced service that creates value for end beneficiaries

Idea Proposal Stage

  • Pilot: We have started to implement the idea as a whole with a first set of real users. The feasibility of an innovation is tested in a small-scale and real world application (i.e. 3-15% of the target population)

Group or Organization Name

Colectivo Tomate (CT)

Tell us more about your group or organization [or lived experience as a displaced person?] (1000 characters)

CT focuses on the internal dynamics of groups or communities, their power and trust relations and their participation strategies, to propose contributive actions for community’s social cohesion enhancement and collective trust. The main goal is to build communication channels through artistic interventions in public spaces. Such interventions aim to activate social transformation through the encounter and connection created by this artistic work and the dialogue needed to achieve it. We create different kind of collaborative processes to encourage the premise that collective construction is posible. CT set forward an integral model to encompass different interaction dimensions with the reality it pretends to transform. The theoretical-methodological grounds foresee the impacts as an essential part of social intervention, organized on 6 axes: Trust and collective action; Capacities reinforcement and communitarian empowerment; Art & culture conflict management;Youths; Public space rescue
