Our Renewable Energy Challenge has seen rich posts and dynamic conversations around how communities might lead the rapid transition to renewable energy. As we continue to build on examples and ideas of others to reach truly innovative solutions, let’s keep in mind the critical elements that ideas should include. The Evaluation Criteria listed below were a collaborative effort between the OpenIDEO Team, the 11th Hour Project and our Advisory Panel. Our hope is that with these elements in mind, ideas will be community-centered, implementable and transition one or more communities to renewable energy.

We’re most excited about ideas that...

HELP COMMUNITIES TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR ENERGY FUTURE

Holistic renewable energy solutions empower people to make choices for themselves – the type of energy they want, how they want to build it and how they want to pay for it.

FOCUS ON RENEWABLE ENERGY

Energy efficiency efforts are critical to reduce overall energy demand – but through this challenge we are searching for projects that focus first and foremost on accelerating renewable energy. This includes technologies such as energy storage and grid integration that will also help to speed up communities’ transition to renewables.

ARE LOCAL AND ACTIONABLE

We're keen on solutions that are tangible and can be quickly tested and proven on a small scale and that have the potential to be replicated in other communities.

ADDRESS COMMUNITY BARRIERS

We want solutions that address a specific challenge within the community. What is that challenge and why is it a big barrier to the community's ability to transition to renewables? Why is this solution essential to the transition to renewable energy?

CONSIDER IMPLEMENTATION FACTORS AND MEASURING IMPACT

Ideas are only as powerful as they are implementable. Why might a community want to implement the solution and what resources are required to do so? How will you measure the impact on the community and more broadly?

If you haven’t posted an idea to our Renewable Energy Challenge yet use these criteria to help bring an idea to life. If you already posted an idea, match it up to our evaluation criteria and see where there’s room for your idea to grow.
