The first OpenIDEO Meetups emerged back in 2013 when we noticed our online contributors were getting together in person to collaborate on the challenges. Today, the OpenIDEO Meetup program has grown to become the brick and mortar cornerstone of our global innovation community. Since the beginning of the Healthy Lives Challenge, we’ve been blown away by the quality of research and ideas generated by our Meetup chapters around the world. Let’s take a moment to celebrate some of the Meetup teams that have made significant contributions to the challenge so far!
Healthy Lives Meetup Highlights
Manchester Meetup Team – Inspired by the times when he first attended OpenIDEO Meetups in London, our new facilitator Philip Matthews recently launched a new Meetup chapter in Manchester. During the Ideas Phase, Phillip and his team have submitted an incredible 9 ideas to the challenge - some of which include: Recipe Suggestions, Kin.ecting, and #Snapeat
Bangalore Meetup Team – In Bangalore, India, another OpenIDEO Meetup chapter launched their first session during the Healthy Lives Challenge. At the India Institute of Science, our facilitator Jyotirmaya Mahapatra kicked off the inaugural Bangalore Meetup brainstorm. The brainstorm led to such provocative ideas as 5 years of Eating Out, Healthier Life, and Cook Good.
Bogota Meetup Team – After a 3-month collaboration with the OpenIDEO team in San Francisco, our rockstar intern Alexandra Alden flew to Bogota, Colombia where she connected with local Meetup facilitator, Sebastian Chavez. Together, they organized a Meetup at Impact Hub Bogota where ideas like WiseGranny and In-Food Motion emerged from the group brainstorm.
Cali Meetup Team – Another OpenIDEO Meetup team in Colombia has also been inspiring us in the Healthy Lives Challenge. The OpenCali Meetup team have returned to refine their winning idea from the Renewable Energy Challenge. We’re excited to see how the OpenCali team will grow their Be~Energy initiative with the collaborative OpenIDEO community that helped launched it.
Washington D.C. Meetup Team – In D.C., Meetup facilitators Beth Mchugh and Logan Powell applied their learnings from a recent IDEO.org / Acumen course to jumpstart a brainstorm session for the Healthy Lives Challenge. The brainstorm yielded 4 great ideas on the platform: El Loser Local, Supermarket Classroom, Grocery Store Challenge, and USDA FFVP + NBCUniversal.
Let's Look Ahead
Thanks to the synergy between our global online community and local meetups, we’ve received an amazing collection of promising ideas in the Healthy Lives Challenge - none of which would have been possible without the collaboration of our Meetup facilitators, OpenIDEO contributors, and our our OpenIDEO Meetup Lead, Em Havens. If you're interested in starting or joining a Meetup in your city, be sure to learn more here.
In the upcoming weeks, we’d love for our community to collaboratively strengthen the ideas in the Refinement Phase. A significant part of the Refinement Phase will be centered around providing focused feedback and prototyping support to help bring our shortlisted ideas closer to Impact. That’s why we’re looking forward to seeing your insights and provocations on the challenge board!
