Tom Hulme & I had a great time facilitating the conversations in the User Experience session at the Open Planet Ideas Development Day. It was amazing to get such a diversity of voices in the room, from SONY designers to sustainability and volunteering experts to community participants. Everyone contributed their rich insights in the range of design sessions including business, geo-location, user experience and game mechanics. We were also excited to meet a top OpenIDEO and Open Planet Ideas collaborator, Arjan Tupan.
The day was a fantastic model for how other OpenIDEO challenges could take winning ideas forward into realization. The focus and physical presence in the room helped us all to get a lot of thinking done in a short period of time.
SONY & WWF’s Open Planet Ideas challenge launched 6 months ago, tackling how existing technologies could be repurposed to address issues of sustainability. From 329 inspirations, they saw an amazing 399 concepts across 6 themes. The challenge was part of OpenIDEO as a dedicated channel, customized visually for the challenge and sharing the same community as OpenIDEO.
The shortlist of 7 concepts were evaluated by the community as well as an expert panel of SONY engineers, WWF environmentalists and IDEO designers.
The challenge is now in the middle of their Realisation phase, which began with the Development Day.
We hope to share the progress of this realization with you over the coming months. So stay tuned!
