Since our Women's Safety Challenge announced the Shortlist in mid-June, the Amplify Team has been hard at work reviewing ideas and identifying which will receive implementation support. In this exciting update Sean Hewens – director of the Amplify program – shares more about the Funded Ideas decision.

Since February, thousands of people and organisations around the world have contributed to the Women’s Safety Challenge, our inaugural Amplify challenge on OpenIDEO. From interviewing a neighbour to brainstorming wearable technology to prototyping community services, it’s been an incredible ride that’s led us to a Shortlist of 15 ideas, each designed to promote safety for women and girls in their own unique way.

Now, it’s time to kick off implementation.

We’ve selected five ideas from our Shortlist to receive DFID funding and IDEO.org design support to help pilot their ideas in the next 12-18 months. They are all part of our Funded Ideas phase, which includes:
What are Funded Ideas?
Over the past month, the Amplify Team and a panel of subject-matter experts reviewed each idea on the Shortlist – and selected the five ideas above based on where our program’s support can have the greatest catalysing effect. We also considered the scope and stage of each idea relative to the funding and design support available.

Consistent with the Amplify program’s goal of bringing a more human-centered approach to aid, the nature of the funding and design support provided to each of the Funded Ideas will be determined on an individual basis. Over the next 12 to 18 months, IDEO.org will work with the individuals and organisations from the five Funded Ideas directly to support their efforts to launch, iterate on and refine their pilots.

What about the rest of the Shortlist?
Our continued support of all the Shortlisted Ideas also begins with specific feedback from Amplify’s designers and expert panel in the coming weeks. We are also committed to connecting the Shortlisted ideas with other potential sources of funding, as they arise.

We consider all 15 Shortisted ideas – and the entire OpenIDEO community's efforts during the Women's Safety Challenge – to be part of the Amplify program's success, and we look forward to keeping in touch as they go on to achieve impact in the world. We’ll provide updates on these ideas to the Amplify and OpenIDEO communities whenever possible.

Head on over to the challenge to check out our Funded Ideas or see if you might be able to help another idea from our Shortlist on their path to implementation.

Cheers, Sean, for sharing this exciting news with us!
